Family: ANATIDAE - Ducks, Geese, and Swans

Distribution: Southern Alaska across Central Canada to Atlantic; also across U.S.A. to Utah and Nevada. Winters in Gulf of Mexico and south to Argentina.

Nest: Delicate structure of dry grass-stalks close to shore of a pond. Inhabitants mainly marshes.

Eggs: 10 to 12; dull white.

Diet: Feeds on bottom vegetation.

Song: Female utters a high quack; courting males have a high whistled note.

Size: 37 to 41 cm (14.5 to 16 inches).
