THE PERIOD in which the tribes of Israel wandered in the wilderness is of immense significance to Hebrew tradi- tion. It is referred to countless times by later Biblical histor- ians, by the Psalmists. and by

The story of Israel's sojourn in the Wilderness is principally one of grumbling and dissati- faction on the part of the peo- le. They continually find fault with Moses and are even ungra-

Following this latest out- burst of murmuring. the Israel- ite host moves from Hazeroth to the Wilderness of Penn. ly- ing in the ccntml area of the Sinaitic peninsula. Now Moses selects 12 men. one from each tribe. and sends them to re- connoiter the Promised Land of Canaan.

They were gone for 40 days . and probably saw the larger part i of Palestine. On their return ten of the spice report that land is indeed ﬂowing with milk and honey. but that it is inhabi- ted by men of great stature and even by giants. in whose ' sight the Israelites would be u I mere. grasshoppers.

Before dsrael could even ex- perience an initial wave of pes- a simism. Caleb and Joshua. thei two remaining spies. took the i initiative and. dissenting from i the majority report. urged! immediate invasion of the land 3 because they felt the Israelites ’ were able to overcome it.

Before the Israelites could act on the suggestion. the other 10 spies reported that they would not be able to conquer the land, and gave an exaggerated report regarding the strength of the inhabitants.

It was now up to Israel to decide whether they would ad- opt the minority report or the maj o r i t y report. Tragically. they chose the latter. Agreeing _wit-h the ten spies. the peo- ple again murmur and wee p and wish that they had died in Egypt.
