A SINGULAR drowning accident occurred at Tracadie yesterday. A boat cortaining three fishermen, whose names are at present un- known, split in two while sailing into the har- bor. ‘The men clung to the sides for a time, and a beatieft the shore to rescue them, but before she arrived one of the men sank and drowned, The other men were rescued in an exhausted condition. The cause of the

boat splitting is a myatery. — oe ——

(On the whole the regatta has every prospect of success, and the energetic eommittee who have it in hand will lose no opportunity te make it the best ever held on Hillsborough. stenanibiilielal Aw Exutna Brorars.—We seldom see meanness and dishonesty combined in one person in a more striking manuer than that shown by the followieg circnusstances : During Dominion Exhibition w a horse was taken from the Island to ifax by steamer and rail. Arrived at Halifax, the official demanded of the owner, the freight. But the owner assured him that the horse was to be shown with the reat of the island exhibit, and that the Government Comwis- sioners would foot the bill. On this assur- ance he was permitted to pass. He then He then went to the stables on the exhibi- \bition grounds, and put up and fed his animal. Mr. Gardiner was not aware of his presence three till a demand was made ‘for the unpaid freight. As the horse hadn't been consigned te him, atid was not for ex- hibition purposes, he refused to pay the bill. The owner, having in the meantime sold the animal, smuggled him away; and so the freight had to be made up by the poor official who allowed him te pass. A private despatch from London says that the workmen in the Staffordshire pot- teries have given notice of a dersand for an advance ot wages in November; that the masters passed a resolution resisting the demand and that a strike must ensue. Such strike would involve 60,000 or 80,000 men.

Dr. A. K. W. Newton, of this city, who has been identified by Mr. Goodnow as the party who represented himself as the agent of Pepperell Mills, of Biddeford, in the recent Western Sea swindle, was arrested to-night. He was formeriy a {coroner of this city, but had his license revoked.

A fire broke out this morning in the busi- ness part of the village of Pulaski. Several buildings on both sides of the main street were burned, .A steamer was sent fr: m t) @ city there.

New York, Oct 6.

Fire broke out again in Tracey & Russell’s Continental brewery, damaged yesterday to the extent of $50,000, and the buildings were almostentirely destroyed. The loss to-day is estimated at $80,000; insurance $145,000.

The entire business portion of Pulaski, N. Y., was burned this morning. Doss $200,000.

Mr. Bingham, a landlord, while riding near Erris, County Mayo, was fired at. A girl riding with him was wounded. The assailant, who was disguised in female clothing, escaped.

The Dunyarven, County Waterford, hranch of the Land League, which in spite of the instructions from Parnell, supported Thomas Dickson, Liberal, and successful candidate at ‘lyrone parliamentary election, isto be dissolved and reorganized with a new president by order of the executive of the Land Leegue.

O'Donnell, spesking at a Lind League meeting at Dungarvon, yesterday, said there were two Governments in Ireland— one Gladstone’s, which nobody minded, and the other that of the League, which the people would obey.

Lonpon, Oct. 6. A private meeting of the directors of the Scottish Chataber of Agriculture, yesterday formally approved the draft of the Land Bill for Scotland providing for the adjust- ment of rents by arbitrators, a revaluation of farms and giving power to a tenant to sell his holding excepting a clause provid- ing for revaluation by the sheriff. The meeting also approved the draft of a bill for the abolition of primogeniture and entail.
