Students of the situation can best understand the magnitude of the heri- tage we in the past have been so care- less about, by comparing the Canadian areas with those of the United King- dom itself and the European nations. All Britain and Irelard, for example, contain 120,930 square miles—England and Wales, 58,311; Scotland, 29,785; Ireland, 82,532,: and the islands 302. This entire area, if it could be set down in Ontario, would leave not very far from haif the Province still untouched, plenty of room, at any rate, for another Mr. Stratton, of West Peterboro, has given notice that he will introduce in the Ontario Legislature a bill to regulate bicycles, which, among other things, will declare all bicycles to be carriages, under the regulation of municipal councils and authorize municipalities to license all such machines provided that the moneys obtained from the taxation are applied to improving roads and making pathways for persons using wheels.

Tyrolese as Artists’ Models,

The Deutsche Revue gives an amusing account of the troubles of Franz von Defregger in obtaining models. The famonsart professor of Munich generally chooses his subjects among his own special land’s folk, the Tyrolese. Finer models it would be hard to get, but they have one fatal superstition—that -who ever allows himself to be sketched, painted or drawn will obtain a speedy immortality through the grave, what- ever nay be his fate on canvas. Thus. in 1873, when painting his ‘‘Letztes Aufgebot” (‘‘Last Levy”) and other pic tures, he spent months in a country beerhouse before he could find a likely model, and when he got the man into his studio it was all in vain, for no soon- er had he seen the javelins, darts, pikes and a complete suit of armor than he shied back, professed a faintness of stomach and fled downstairs. With his second model he advanced a little far- ther, but as soon as he was clad in ar- mor and brandishing an ancient battle ax astout country woman rushed in “Was! Du willst mit dem Landsturm gehen? Das sollst du nie und nimmer.” And, seizing him, armor and ran him down the fatal stairs. Outside she held him fast and stripped off his armor piece by piece; then, leaving the disused panoply lying in a heap, she hurried him home, a model husband, but not a model hero.
