Tue instruments formerly used ly the St. Patrick's Band having been presented to St. Joseph’s and St. Ann’s Convents, in this city, were sold for the benefit of those institutions on Saturday last. They were purchased by the committee of the 82nd Battalion, and will very hkely replace some of the instruments in the Band of that Battalion. — Herald.

A report was in circulation at Halifax, Saturday evening that Warren Smith, as well as the other members of the crew of his father- in-law’s vessel, who have been missing since te galeof August 29th, had been rescued. ic was stated that the men were picked up by a Norwegian vessel and carried to a South American port, but the rumor could not be tracea to a reliable source.

CattLe anp Sneep Exporration.— Messrs. Wood, George and Humphrey, of | Sackville, shipped 150 cattle and 320 sheep to England on Saturday last. They lost | quite largely on their trial shipment of sheep, a few weeks ago, by reason of their not being good enough for the market. It is not creditable to our farmers, many of whose lands are well adapted for sheep rising, that the company had to make its purchases in P. E. I. for the recent ship- ment.—Amherst Gazette.

M. 8S. ‘‘Griffon” a banquet at the Rankin House, on Tuesday evening next, the 16th instant, to begin at eight o'clock, p.m. Among those moving 1n the matter the following gentlemen may be named:—Messrs. Tue professional four-oared race at the regatta held in connection with the Centennial Exhibition was won by the Carleton crew of St. John. The crews starting were the \Vil- liams crew, of Halifax, N. 8.; Carleton crew, of Carleton, St. John; Smith-Wisted crew, of St, John; Logan crew, of Portland, N. B.; Richmond crew, of Richmond, N. 8S. Soon alter the start the Logan crew fouled the Williams boat. The Carleton crew took the lead, and maintained it to the end of the race. The Richmond crew came second, but having crossed the line outside the judges’ stand,they lost second money.

Government of Canada Loan for $4,000,000, 4 per cent, Car rency Bonds.

HE Minister of Finance for the Dominion of Canada, is authorized to receive ten- ders for a loan of $4,000,000 currency bonds, bearing interest from the Ist November, 1883 at the rateof 4 percentum per annum, pay- able half yearly onthe lst May and tet November of each year, at his office, in the Finance Department, Ottawa. This loan is issued under the authority of an Act of the Parliament of the Demwinien of Canada, passed during their last Session, (46th Victoria, cap. 3, sec, 4) The object of the loan is to provide for, the payments of debts maturing or redeemable in the course of the current fiscal year, and partly for expenditure on public works. The principal of the loan now offered is to be repaid at Ottawa in twenty years, Subscribers will receive bonds to bearer, which may at any future time be converted into registered stock The subscription list will be opened on Wednesday, the 17th day of October next, and will be closed on Saturday, the 20th day of October next, at 4 o’clock p. m, and tenders in the accompanying ferm, marked on the outside “Tenders for Debentures,” will be received at the Finance Department, Ottawa, up to and including the latter date, at the hour mentioned, Tenders must be made for not less than $1,000, and in multiplies of $1,000, The allotment of the joan will be made as s0on a8 possible of the close of the-subscrip- tion list, the amcunts allotted will be puyabie on the ist day of November next,and Bonds will be issued shortly after that date.
