THERE has been a drop in potatoes, the result cf heavy supplies in the United States’ markets. Hebrons, Early Rose and Garneta are still selling here at 25 cents per bushel, but other varieties are down to 20 cents. There seems to ba a scarcity cf potatoes all round, and it ie likely that later in the season, or next spring there will be another rise. A good many potatoes have been seat to Mon- trea), and the schooner Marie Vigi- lante is now loading potatoes st the Rail- way Wharf, Alberton, for the Montreal mar- ket. Latest advices state that the price there is 52 cents for a bag of 90 lbs.,—* bushel and ahalf. That would be at the rate of 35 cents per bushel. Taking cost of freight and bags and handling, as well as deprecia- tion, into consideration, there will not, at this rate, be much left for the shipper, who purchases them at 20 cents. We under- stand that a large shipper here is prepared to send a steamer load to Montreal if he can obtain 40 cents per bushel for them

laid down in that market. Private advices state that people there are compelled to pay for potatoes, by retail, as much a3 25 cents per

peck; and it 1s not ualikely that prices in Montreal and other towns of the larger Provinces will advance considerably.

The price of oats in this city remuins at 34 cents per bushel for white and black, with no change to note in the markets abroad. For hay the price continues to be $10 to $11 per ton.

The price of pork ranges from four to six cents as to quality. In Montreal the price of Canadian short cut per bbl. is $16:50 to hy 00, and of Western mess from $14.50

to $15.50. In Chicago, October pork is quoted at $11.50.

“Of course the Russian claim to extra- | ordinary jurisdiction in Behring Sea rests / ,upon the same grounds as the pretensions | that we have put forward; we drawing ours from the alleged rights which Russia trans- jferred tons at the time of our purchase of ; Alaska. The Herald has more than once in dicated its eatire disbelief in the soundness of these pretensions, and in anticipation of the finding of the international tribunal has never hesitated to condemn the action of our state department ia resting what could easily be made a good and equitable case upon such an archaic and worm-eaten fountain. It hardly need be stated that if we did not have a seal controversy of our own the seizure of certain American sealers by the Russian authorities and the barbaric treatment which the crews of these vessels have had to endure, would arouse the indignation of our peopie, and it it were gracticed by the English in- stead of the Russians would be used to fan up a feeling that would demand a declaration a war if reparation were not instantly made. But this fine show of spirit has to be sup- pressed, first, because if the claims we are making upon a certain part of Behring Sea are to have any force and effect, the Russian cruisers are fully justified in seizing these American sealing vessels, while curiously enough, it is very much easier when American citizens are maltreated to evoke sentiments of hostility if the persecutors are English officials than is the case when the barbarity is prac- ticed by representatives of the Russian government. This, too, although the latter is the greatest and most intense despotism that exists upon the face of the earth.” a <p -

A large and influcntial audience consist- ing chiefly of farmers of Narrows Creek and the adj»ining districts, together with a delegation from Dundas, assembled in the schoolhouse of the above-named district, on the evening of the 19th inst., for the purpose of obtaining information and dis- cussing details concerning the erection uf a cheese factory in that vicinity.

After the opening of the meeting by the Rev. J. C. McLssn. Me. Hugh A. Me- Phee was elected chairman and the under- signed secretary.

Mr. T. J. Diilon, superintendent of the experimental dairy station at New Perth, being called upon, arose and in a very energetic manner expressed his views concerning the erection of a cheese factory in that locality, stating that we here are just as well adapted for this industry as the people of Ontario. He suggested that a committee be appointed to canvass the district and ascertain as near as possible the number of cows therein capable of sup- plying milk.

After giving information regarding the construction, cost and organizstion of a factory, he proceeded to point out the different varieties of fuod most suitable to produce a large flow of milk, viz: peas, oats and vetches as early, and corn which can be growu here to the utmost perfec- tion as late feed. Having given many other practical suggestions, he brought his highly appreciable lecture to a close.

He was succeeded by Mr. Shaw, who in his usual Ciceronian style spoke at very | great length upon the subject. He de- nounced that prevailing opinion that farming is a drudgery and pointed out the means by which it can be made a pleasant and profitable occupation. He next re- ferred to the decline in prices obtained tor) our present industries, and to our changed | condition, not forgetting a severe rebuke to that merciless and detestable potato bug. He, like his predecessor, strongly urged the abandonment of the present system of farming, and recommended stock raising and the manufacture of cheese and butter. He very minutely described the kind and cultivation of food most suitable

One of the queerest eccentricities lately exhibited by the German Emperor is his reported refusal to allow Herr Brandt, the German Minister to Pekin, to marry an American lady, Miss Hart. The wife of the German Ambassador ia St. Petersburg. Herr Von Schweinitz, is an American, as are several other consorts of German oifi- cials high in rank. More especially the Countess Walderse-, one of the greatest ladies at the Court of Berlin, and an aunt by marriage of the Kaiser himself, was born in America. The relations of the Emperor with the American colony in his capital are very cordial, and it is said that Mr. Poultney Bigelow and his wife are now especial favorites at Court. The inference is, therefore, that Herr Braadt was refused permission to marry, not because his in- tended bride was an American, but because his imperial master wished the German Ambassador in China to remain a bachelor. But Herr Brandt, like any man of spirit, preferred a gocd wife to his diplomatic post and promptly sent in his resignation. The Zanzibarees of the interior have no great reason to like the Germans, whom they regard as intruders on territory to which they have no claim. The German colonization of East Africa began, indeed: with a quarrel with Zanzibar, which had previously been on excellent terms with England. While the Sultan’s authority was paramount over the empire, there was practicaliy unquestioned right of way through any part of it. Of course the good Sultan of those times is gone, but had the old order continued his successors would loubdtless have followed id his footsteps. It is not, of course, to Ls implied that, whenever a savage tribe assaile a German expedition in Zsuzibar territory the Ger- mans are in the wrong, but the antipathy to them was none the less based on their lack of consideration some years ago for native rights. What is worse others are the victims of the prejudice against them.
