Mr. Roserr Harris—whe has been pur- suing art studies in London and Paris dur- ing the past two years—returned home last evening. He will remain in Charlottetown during the winter.

Hon. J. C. Rorgz received a telegram from Sir John McDonald this afternoon, notifying him of his appointment to a seat in the Cabinet, and requesting his presence at Montreal. Mr. Pope will leave in the 6.30 train to-morrow morning.

‘THERE was a very large attendance at the market to-day. Sales were lively, with a slight change in prices, as follows: Butter, from 22 to 24 cents per lb.; geese, from 40 to 55 cents; ducks, from 20 to 24 cents each ; chickens, per pair, from 30 to 45 cents ; potatoes, from 25 to 32 cents; pork, eareass, from 4} to 5 cents per lb.; hay, from 45 to 50 cents per 100 lbs.; oats, from 30 to 31 cents.

THe citizens of Souris were somewhat startled on Saturday evening last on learn- ing that C. Anderson, more familiarly known as the ‘‘Squid,” had committed a brutal assault on his servant girl by striking her on the head with a billet of wood. The girl still remains partially unconscious, and as her recovery is thought to be somewhat doubtful, the Magistrates of the town have arrested Anderson until the consequences of his cowardly attack is more fully known.

Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, William Corish, jr., arrested for being drunk and incapable, was _lec- tured and discharged. John Flynn, ar- rested on complaint of his brother for being drunk and incapable, was fined $3 and costs or fourteen’ days. James Troy and John O'Reilly, arrested on the 3rd inst. for larceny of goods from the store of A. A. Baldwin «& Co., were remanded to jail to await trial in the next gitting of the Su- preme Court. James McIntyre, remanded for vagrancy, was discharged.

Aw action of an assault which occurred at Belfast Cross Roads, on the night of the Dominion election, was disposed of by Theoph. DesBrisay, Esq., to day, as fol- lows: In the case of the Queen on the

fal.-Nicholson, for assault and threaten- ing language, the defendant was fined 25 cents aud costs, and in default to be im- prisoned two months, and for the threats to enter into his own recognizance in $400 and find two good and sufficient sureties each in $200 to keep the peace and be of good be- haviour for six calendar months.

Gotp.—While Mr. William Coffin, of Bay Fortune, was.digging in his garden the other day, he turned up a piece of metal resembling the handle of an old-fashioned urn, which, on closer investigation, has proved to be nothing less than pure gold. This prize is“considered to be worth be- tween $80 and $100. If reports prove true, Mr. Coffin is likely to have his garden well dug for next season; and if we may judge of the future by what has already occurred a golden harvest will be the reward. Now that the Grits are out, a good time is com- ing, boys; ‘‘ wait a little longer.”

Tue inquest held before Dr. Muttart, Coroner, on the 22nd ult., on view of the body of the late James Thompson, of Souris Line Road, resulted in a verdict by the jury of ‘‘death from natural causes.” It will be recollected that at the time of Thompson’s death it was feared by some that his death had been caused by a blow which he received in a quarrel a few days previous at Souris. A post mortem was considered necessary, which was skillfully performed by Dr, Walsh, of Mt. Stewart. After hearing the Doctors sworn testimony, the jury found the following verdict : “‘That the deceased James ‘Shompson came to his death from natural causes.” The deceased was an industrious young man, and leaves a widow and two children, besides numerous other friends to mourn their loss.

THe annual meeting of the Queen’s Co. Rifle Association, was held last evening in the Police Court Koom. The following ofticers were elected for the ensuing year : Major Pollard, President, relected. Coun- cil:—Major Dogherty, re-elected; Lieut. Passmore, re-elected; Corp!. Hewson, re- elected; Pte. Wia. Jenkins, Ensign D. Stewart and Lient. J. D. Irving. Ewen McDougall, Sec’y and Treasurer. It was decided to hold the annual Shooting Matches at Kensington Rifle Range, on Wednesday, the 23rd inst. A fee of one doliar is charged for membership, which entitles any person to all the privileges of the Association, in- cluding his chances for wmning the best prizes at their anx ual competition.

Tut Band of the 62nd Battalion arrived by train last evening. Leaving the depot they discoursed first-class music, marched up Weymouth street to Grafton, through Grafton to Queen, down Queen to Water, and from thence to the Revere House. At 11 o'clock this morning they again paraded several of the principal streets, playing a number of choice airs, after which they en- tered Tanton’s Photograph Studio, where the Band group was photographed in Mr. Tanton’s excellent style. The Military Concert in the Market Hall this evening will be superior to anything yet given here, which, together with the Bonnet Hop at the Athenzeum to-morrow evening, we hope to see liberally patronized. Citizens, give this excellent company’a bumper house.
