Hairax had a rather extensive fire Sunday morning. Four tenement houses were de- stroyed. One of the burned buildings, it is said, had been insured for £509 old Nova Scotia currency, during a period of 33 years. The origin of the fire is a mystery. ne of the neighbors had seen a lighted lamp in one of the buildings just before the fire. One of the Halifax papers intimates that an investi gation is called for.

A CABLEGRAM from Sir Charles Tupper has been received by Hon. Mr. McLelan stating that it is desired in London that part of the Canadian fisheries exhibit should remain there permanently. There seems to be a likelihood that India, Canada and Australia, working to- gether, may revive the project of a colonial museum specially set apart for the enlighten- ment of the people of England as to the pro- ductions of Canada and the other portions of the empire mez. tioned.

Givexn Ur For Lost.—Messrs, James Butler & Co.’s brigantine ‘‘Ellie E. Butler.” Captain Spencer, before reported overdue, may now be given up as lost. It is seventy- five days since she left Halifax for “ingston, Jamaica, since which time nothing bas been heard of her. Her cargo, which is insured with Messrs. Twining & Twining’s offices for $10,000, was 50 barrels of mackerel, 500 barrels of herring, 68 barrels of alewives, 225 tierces, 250 boxes, 200 half-boxes of codfish, 22 M shingles and 600 feet lumber. The vessel is insured in the Nova Scotia office for $4,000 and in the Atlantic for $3,000. She was a vessel of 186 tons register, and was built at this portin 1871.—Halifax Chronicle.

Boston Comepy Co.—Last night the Boston Comedy Co. played the beautiful drama “Driven from Home” or the ‘‘Christmas Carse.” {[t was put on the stage in Mr. Webber's best style, and was probably better appreciated by the large audience present, than any he has yet played. The plot of the drama is a simple one, Old Farmer Allan, who had quarreiled with his brother some years before the play opens, adopted the jatter’s child, a beautiful young girl, when he died. ‘The girl, Miss Dora Allan, grew up into womanhood, and wom the old man's affections by her gentleness aad obedience. Farmer Allan, therefore, wa» very desirous thet she should marry his only son William Allan, who had previously been secretly married to Mary Morrison—a distant relation.
