Christian Unity.

Srm,—As the subject of Christian Unity is being so much talked of at present, i should be thankful if you would kindly permit me to make a few remarks thereon. I am one of those old-fashioned Churchmen —one who believes that the principles of the Church of Engiand are right and worth maintaining and handing on to future generations. If 1] supposed that any of the laws or principles of our venerable Church were wropg or upreasChable, | would not remain in her communion another day. I am a firm believer in Christian unity, too; but I believe unity must and will come about, not by a sacrifice of the truth, but through the truth. I do not believe it will ever be advanced by any individuals posing before the world as more broad and liberal than the Church to which they owe allegiance. That there is a de- cided difference between the principles of the Church of England (whether those principles are right or wrong is not the question at present) and those of the vari- ous denominations, everyone knows. And this fact is clearly illustrated by the follow- ing anecdcte which was related by the Rev. Flavel 8. Mines, concerning his early Pres- byterian days :

“I had been personally acquainted in my whole life, with but two or three of the “piscopal clergy, and of these the only one I ever intimately knew, I had seen in the day of ‘revivals’ spying out, and to all appearance coveting the liberty of his dissenting brethren, and mingling to great disadvantage with all sorts of sects, who amused themselves much at his awkward balancings among them, and assigning as his best reason for not admiting these brethren into his pulpit, that ‘one of the canons of his church forbade it.’ By the way, it was an apology that elicited from an illiterate old lady, that had been for many years the housekeeper in my father’s family, a remark, having a range and force of meaning, of which she in her dotage, and myself then only fourteen years of age, but little dreamed, that ‘if that were the case,’ she thought ‘they had better fire that canon of.’ Right! Thought I to myself—and so 1 acknowledge it oulins me etiil—that if Episcopacy be of the small importance that some attach to it ‘they had better fire that canon off.’”

Every right thinking person must be of the same opinion. If the pansies of the Church of England must bs apologized for, or some miserable hair-splitting expianation given in their defence, it would be a thousand times better to fire them all off and joia some other communion. In this way we would (if we are now wrong) be really furthering the cause of unity. But till then let us maintain and show that we believe the priaciples our Church to be right,

Farewell Dinner to R. W. Sprague, Esq.

Court Sylvan, I. O. F., entertained R. W. Sprague at a farewell dinneron Tuesday even ing last, at the Village Hotel, Montague. Seme sixty members of the Order, with sev- eval specially invited guests sat down and did full justice tomenu so abundantly provided. After satisfying the wants of the inner man Mr, Sprague was presented with a highly complimentary address and a Past Chief Ranger’s jewel, as a token of appreciation by the members of the Court. The address and the present were acknowledged by Mr. Sprague in a most appropriate and affecting speech. The presentation was made in a very graceful manner by Dr. J. M. Martin, C. R A number of toasts were duly proposed and responded to, These toasts were “Our Queen,” which was honored by the whole com- pany standing and singing the National An- them. ‘“‘Our guests from sister Courts,” replied tu by O. H. Poole and L. Jordan; “Sister societies,” replied to by H. Nelson, D. A. Martin and J. T. Robison; ‘The ladies,” replied to by H. Martin and W. H. Brown; ‘*Our host and hostess,” replied to by B. F. Stewart and P. Gordon, and by the company singing “He is a jolly good fellow,” &c. The genial host of the Village Hotel acknowledged the toast in his usuai pleasant style. The speeches were short, pointed and spirited; and the speakers, as well as the whole gathering, ex- pressed their regret at the departure of Mr. Spragus. As master of ceremonies Mr. W. L. Brydges performed his duties in a very efficient manner. The evening was spent very pleasantly and the dinner was one of the most successful gatherings held at Montague for some time and re- flected credit on the committee of arrange- ments.

Tue Work or A Doc.—A singular and very sad story comes from Kars, King's county. The week before last while Mra. Charles Jones, of that place, was at church service her youngest child, some seven months old, was at home under the care of ite father. The child being asleep, Mr. Jones thought he would havea nap on a bed adjoining the room, Not long afterwards he was endaetes by the noise of the babe, but thinking it would drop to sleep again, he did not get up at the moment. The babs continued to ery. Mr. Jones got up and was horror- stricken to find that the dog which had been left in the room had gnawed off both its ears, part of the nose and was gnawing at the face. Late reports state that the poor little creature is still alive.—Frederictos Gleaner.

AnornER Sap Dexatn.—We regret to hear that Mr. ©. C. Watt, the well known and popular representative of Messrs. Ramsay & Son, Montreal, died at the Hotel Rass, Summerside, on Thursday even- ing, of catarrah of pneumonia. Mr. Watt arrived in Summerside ov Saturday. Being unwell, he took to his bed almost as soon as he landed. Although the best medical assistance was called in, and Mr. and Mrs. Russ and other kind friends did all in their power for the sick man, he grew worse rapidly, and on Thursday evening his spirit passed peacefully away. His budy has been forwarded to Newcastle, N. B., for inter ment,
