Tur Lecture, by Rev. R. B. Macdonald, under the auspices of the Reform Club, was rather sparsely attended. Probably the same disposition that prompts people to “dogear” sensational novels instead of reading literature of an instructing nature, caused the absence of many. something light—nigger minstrels, for ex- ample to the spending of an hour in im- roving their ideas by reading a lecture.

The reverend gentleman commenced his subject, ‘* How to read and what books to read,” by a comparison between the modes of education in the time of the Grecian Republic, and those of the 19th Century. He quoted Lord Macaulay’s vivid desert) - tion of a stranger entering the living city of Athens in the days of the old poets and philosophers ; and finished the quotation with Macaulay's idea of the training of a student in that city—‘‘ that no modern university had such a course.” Probably not fifty of the best men in Greece had read through half a dozen volumes. They were not a reading people, and yet were thor- oughly literary. The common people in the streets could understand and enjoy the poetical stories of rhapsodists, the disputes of the philosophers, the orations of the poli- ticians, the tragedy and comedy of the theatres, the grandeur and grace of archi- tecture, and the beauty and power of the sculpture and paintings of that refined city. A student instead of reading and swelling by the enlightenment of kerosene oil in a lit- tle box of air eight feet by six was content to see and hear in the open air and light of day, to remember what he saw and heard, and to think and understand it. Ifa per- son wishes to improve his mind by reading or otherwise, application should be his first law. With change of time systems of edu- cation have changed since the invention of printing. Books now, instead of men, are the professors and teachers of learning. The old professors now have become com- mentators, explainers, and conductors of education. Books have been written on every imaginable subject, and the difticulty is to choose what books to read. The best books are those which will direct in the proper course, and strengthen the will, memory, and understanding. Nothing should be read in a hurry or skimmed over. Food for the mind is what the reader should seek ; and let him eat it slowly and digest it theroughly ; otherwise he will be- come an emaciated and diseased dyspeptic, lacking bone, muscle, and energy. Read a few books well is a good rule for those who have not much time for reading. All per- sons should read and understand books re- lating to their own profession or business. They should not however be content with this narrow class distinction. A lawyer, doctor, merchant, or mechanic would be but a dull and uninteresting companion if he could talk on no subject but his own particular employment. Such men may acquire large fortunes, but are almost sure to be thought lightly of by people of intelligence and culture. All who wish to have anything like a liter- ary education should read works on history, science and art. In reading history care should be taken by the reader to under- stand whether or not the mind of the author was prejudiced im regard to any event of which he has written. A good book, if itis by an author whom you have not read before, should be re-read ; for, on the second reading, many interesting ideas will come to you that were unnoticed when reading it the first time. A book should be likea friend. Do not be satisfied until you can understand and sympathisé with it. A great deal of unhealthy and poisonous trash is scattered broadcast through the world in the shape of cheap literature. A few years ago the police of New York seized some tons of immoral literature and burned it; and everybody must approve of their action in this matter. The novel may be called the literature of the age, and is a power—and, in some authors hands, a power for good. The popular taste seem to argue the fact that novel reading, instead of being a means of in- struction, amusement and insight into real life, is merely a barrier that stays all ideas of literary improvement in the minds of those afflicted with excessive novel reading. The statistics of public libraries shew the

pular choice of novels; Addison, Sir Walter Seott, Dickens and Thackeray stand upon their shelves in neat bindings; but the books that treat of noble rakes and charming actresses—that introduce their readers to the delicious vices of courts and duchesses, these are the ones that are dog- eared and falling asunder. ‘These novel readers are too lazy to go through a book unless it has a full per centage of sensation. Surely there is enough sensation in the world in the present century, to supply the mind of any reasonable man with wonder and excitement. Nations are built up, thrones overturned, electricity performs wonders, wars are carried on, and enormous crimes and gigantic swindles perpetrated. Woaat searchings the fold philosopher woald make with his lantern, could he but come into this nineteenth century. Novel read- ing, like the theatre going, should be an instructing relaxation. In one sense it may be said that psopl> were better off when one good book was worth an hundred acres of iand than now, when as mach immoral literature can be bought for ten cents as will send a soul to destruction.

Sir. A. T. Galt, who acted as the Cana- dian Commissioner at the Halifax award, is in the city with the object, it is under- stood, of getting information for Lord Sal- isbury, to enable that gentleman to close his case and reply toSecretary Evarts. The! Newfoundlanders claim that their ground } of action is correct, and will insist on Amer- ican fishermen fishing in British waters; complying with British rule. Our papers make very light of Secretary Evarts’ case, and are quite unanimous in their opinion that the money will be paid and fthat the dispute will turn out to be a trumpery one.

While Sir Selby Smyth was in England it was suggested to him that a permanent military force be organized at Ottawa to add certain lustre to the new Court, the home authorities going so far as to offer assistance in the shape of uniforms, ete. The Government have, however, vetoed the matter, on the grounds that the present condition of our finances would not admit of any such expenditure.

One report is that Mr, Macdougall will receive the Judgeship rendered vacant by the resignation of Judge Loranger.

The Allan mail steamer ‘* Sardinian ” arrived at Quebec to-day, having made the fastest time on record, by one hour and ten minutes.

Huntington, ex-Postmaster General, assumes the editorship of the Montreal Herald in the spring.

The Windsor Hotel Company will build another wing to the hotel, costing $50,000.

The Gaspe election returns as far as received indicate that M. Fortin, Liberal- Conservative, is elected by a large majority.

Private advices from London say that there is arumor at Scotland Yard that one or more of the metropolitan detectives will be sent to Ottawa during the stay of the Mar- quis of Lorne in this country. What the detectives are to busy themselves about is a mystery ; perhaps they are to follow their R. H. 8’s in their journey throughout the United States and see that they are not molested by the Fenians.

The Dominion notes in circulation are $10,443,859.27, the excess of specie is $31,- 160,29. ,

Notice is given that that the Direct U. S. Cable Company, limited, incorporated 1877, will apply to the Parliament of the Domin- ion of Canada, at next session, for an act to extend its corporate charavter to the said Dominion, to enable it to perform cable communication between Great Britain and the Dominion, and to revoke letters of pat- ent of the said Dominion, issued on the 17th May, 1870, purporting to incorporate cer- tain persons, under the*name of ‘Direct United States Company, Limited.”

A FARMER who was last night proceeding homewards, much intoxicated, by way of St. Peter's Road, had a narrow escape from being struck by a passing train.

Hon. J. C. Pope, Minister of Marine and Fisheries, will remain on the Island until about the 23rd inst. He will then proceed to Halifax to attend the reception of the Vice Regal party, which will take place on or about the 24th.

Joun Ines, Ese., left on exhibition in the market to-day the largestfmangel wurtzel ever grown on the Island. It was taken from his garden in this City, and weighs twenty-four pounds and three-quarters.

Mr. AtrxanpeR McKintay of North ‘iver has been for some time past mysteri ously losing sheep from his farm. On the 22nd ult. when he lost four fine fat ewes, the total number lost was twenty-nine. These were, without doubt, feloneously taken; but who the thief or thieves were he, up to Tuesday last, could not discover. On that day he was informed that a but er (pro tem) had been carrying on a business in the Royalty under very questional cir- cumstances, and that he had recently slanghtered a quantity of mutton and offered it for sale by the quarter. Mr. McKinlay visited the place and enquired where he got ‘that fat mutton” and he replied that he ‘‘purchased it from his brother (who lives in the neighborhood of Mr. McKinlay’s) who had purchased it froma farmer who also hves in the same vicinity. Mr. McK. determined to get the bottom of it, went im- mediately to the brother and asked him some questions respecting the sheep. He denied point blank that he had ever sold the butcher any sheep, and the farmer also denied that he had ever sold sheep to the butcher’s brother. From this it was evident to Mr. McKinley that ‘‘there was some- ‘thing rotten in Denmark,” and to day he | issued a warrant against that butcher and a younger brother. The case will be tried to-morrow. | Married.
