JUMPED THs Track.—A train on the Tees- water branch, on coming into the Mount Forest, Ont., station at two o'clock on Sunday morning, jumped the track and two engines which had been driving it broke loose and ran lor a mile and a quarter, when they stuck in a snow drift. A snow plough with two engines from Teeswater coming along ran into

On Monday morning last Bennet felled a tree on this land. Morrisey, with a brother, appear- on the ground and claimed the tree which had just beem cut, whem Bennet drew a_ revolver and fired, the ball taking effect in Morrisey’s breast, but glancing upward and doing no im- mediate harm At letest accounts Bennet had not been arrested, but he is summoned to stand trial on Monday uext, when full par ticulars will be given.

The Winter Carnival.
oT. JOHN, N. B., Feb. 28. The weather was beautiful to-day, and the whole city was en fete over the Carni-

val. It was a grand success in every re- spect, far surpassing anything the rojectors had dreamed of. About five eudind people were in parade. There
were many attractive and brilliant features in it. Manchester, Robertson & Allison, who represented King Carnival, spent over $500 in their display. The car was drawn by twelve horses, driven tandem fashion. There were scores of other beautiful things, the business houses sparing no money or pains to make it a brilliant success.
In the evening, 5,000 people sought ad- mission to the Carnival, and many hun- dreds had to be turned away. There were also horse races at Moosepath Park. The
Carnival was such a success that probably there will be another next year on a@ more elaborate scale.

Twenty-five Protestant lady boarders have left Notre Dame Institute, Bond street. Enquiry has elicited from them the statement that they left om account of the efforts of the nuns to proselytize a young Protestant girl named Dodds. On Sunday night, they allege that the nuns attempted to force the girl to prayers, but, by pre- arrangement, she cried out, and the Pro- testant ladies rushed to her rescue.

Orrawa, Feb. 27. } Islanders up here were considerably | amused to-day on reading the Ottawa de- | spatch to last Saturday’s Patriot, wherein Mr. E. J. Hodgson is reported to be here ; urging his claim toa seat on the bench, | supported by Mr. Ferguson, who opposes Mr. Sullivan’s elevation.
There is not a spark of truth in the con- coction, which is rendered more* ridiculous by the fact that Mr. Hodgson did not meet Mr. Ferguson, who had left Ottawa before the former had arrived.
Not only are no vacancies anticipated on the island bench, probably for many years except by interposition of Providence, but Mr. Hodgson assures me his mission is partly on business with the Department of Marine, and partly on business of his clients, which may yet take him as far as Kingston.
The gauziness of the Patriot's {Ottawa special is painful, and its domestic source apparent among those who take an interest in Island matters.
There is a good deal of speculation as to what Laird means, first by his attack on the Judges,“and now by assuming their speedy death or resignation.

In the Parnell Cominission this morning, on the opening of the court, Sir Richard Webster read a statement on the part of the Times announcing complete withdrawal from the enquiry of the evidence relating to Parnell and other letters, and expressing regret of the T’mes that it ever published them.
Sir Charles Russelk expressed a desire to investigate the conduct of Houston and the conspiracy behind him.
Judge Hannen suggested in reply that Sir Charles place his clients in the witness box and consider what action to take con- cerning Houston.
In accordance with this suggestion Mr. Paruell was called asa witness. His ap- pearance in the bgx caused a stir in the crowded court room and every eye was fixed upon him. Mr. Parnell, in quiet but firm tones, denied that the signature ap- pended to the letter of May 15th was his,

Mr. Matthews also said he had no inform- ation regar’ing Houston which at present would justify him in preventing Houston from leaving the country.

Parnell hav- ing in the witness box stated the letters to be forgeries, we accept in every respect the truth of of the statement and express our regret most fully and sincerely at hav- ing been induced to publish the letters as Parnell’s or use them in evidence against him. ‘This expression of regret includes also the letters falsely attributed to Egan, Davitt and O’Kelly. This withdrawal, of course, refers exclusively to letters obtain- ed from Pigott.”

The Summerside Carnival. ‘Tue Carnival held in the Crystal Rink, Summerside, last evening, was, in the opinion of those present, the most success- ful ever held there. The Rink was beauti- fully ecorated for the occasion, and was well filled with spectators. The costumes were, in many eases, new and costly, and upwards of 160 skaters took part. The Artillery Band furnished excellent music during the evening. Below are the names
