A number of Halifax ladies the other day undertook to convince a liquor dealer of the necessity for his withdrawal from the traftic in which he was en; gaged, ‘by visit- ing his premises and by the use of remon- strance and argument. They had, how- ever, Very poor success, the dealer holding stubbornly to his opinion that he had a right to sell liquor if he pleased, and per- emptorily refusing their request to be allow- ei to prayin his saloon. A despatch to the New York Herald from Fredericktown, described the result of a different system of tactics which was adopted by a number of women in that place.. The des- patch says :—

Thirteen women marched to Kelley’s saloon to-day and beat in the door and windows with hatchets, and destroyed everything within, including several barrels of liquors and beer, cases, casks, bottles, jugs, demijohns, counters, stove and all the fixtures. The building is a total wreck. ©’Connor’s saloon was also visited and all the liquor destroyed. Drug stores were notified to remove their liquors before Mon- day or they would be treated like the others. The women will be arrested on Monday. They have a strong money back- ing. Great excitement pre evails. ~ Oe

The revolution or father ‘coup’ detat which took place in Hayti on ‘the 3rd in- stant will, it is hoped, be the means of put- |}; ting an end to a state of things which wes growing insupportable. President Guillermo has been devoting his attention to the ad- vancement of agricultural enterprises, from which it is expected that much good will: result to the people at large. The Spanish Commissary-General returned home some time ago, and the difficulty at issue between Spain and» Dominica is believed to be settled.

The Greenbackers of Massachusetts are again in trouble, their candidate for seerc- tary of the Commonwealth, Mr. Jonathan Arnold, of North Abington, having con- cluded that he can best serve the cause by declining. This is the third candidate of that party who has given up the battle dur- ing the campaign in b that State.

The Liverpool Post tells a stranze adven- ture of a venturesome small boy. It ap- pears that he played truant from school, and dared not go home at night. He man- aged to get into the station-yard at Chor- ley, with the intention of passing the night in one of the passenger carriages; but he failed to gain access, the deors being locked. He then crept under the guard’s van, and pulled himself on the couple .of short iron rods between the axle of the wheels and the carriage floor, and betwéen which the brake apparatus passed. In this position he went to sleep, and at 5 o'clock in the morning the train started for Wigan. The lad was actually brought to Wigan, and again taken to Chorley, clutching the rods. At the latter placé he was di8covered, still fast asleep, and_resecued from his perilous posi tion. .Lhe marvel is how the lad remained on this frail support during his 18 miles journey, and asleep all the while.
