Mr. Sexton claimed the Scotsman charged him with drunkenness. The de- fendants asserted thet they only intended the reference complained of by Mr. Sexton | to be a suppositious case
Wasuineton, D. C., July 21,—Instruc- ltions were to-day sent to the commanding officer of the revenue steamer Woodbury now in the vicinity of Eastport, Me., to proceed to St. Stephen, N. B.,, for the pur- pose of co-operating with United States consul Neill in an investigation of the re- cent seizure near Eastport of seven Amer- ican fishing vessels for the alleged violation of the Dominion fishery laws. The revenue «flicer was instructed to prepare charts showing the position of each vessel at the time of the seizure to determine the gues- tion of jurisdiction.
Lonpon, July 21 —The deliberative com- mittee of the council of the Imperial Fed- eration League, appointed to consider§defi- nite proposals for federation, bave met to settle the preliminaries and adjourned till November, when the holidays end. The committee is unusually strong, and represents liberals and conservatives, free traders and protectionists. It includes Lord Reay, ex-governor of Bombay ; Sir Lyon Playfair, Lord Brassey and Dr. Brice, members of Gladstene’s last ministry, and Sir Daniel Cooper, Sir John Calomb and other well known supporters of the prosent ministry.
