A Fatal Jump

Mowncron, April 12.

Fietcher, Kinney, while attempting to jomp over a fist ear on the Albert southern railway at Alma yesterday, fell between two cars and the wheels passed over one leg severing it just below the hip. It was amputated, but Kinney died from the shock and the loss of blood.

Fishery Protection.

Orrawa, April 12 Commander Wakeham will supervise the Fishery Protection Service during the coming season; but Captain Spain will have practical control, as Wakeham will be engaged all summer in his capacity as In- ternational Fish Commissioner.

Smuggicrs Imprisoned.

Boston, April 12 J. G Crowell, of East Boston, and Charles Stibbins, of Yarmouth, N.S., were each sentenced to six months in Cambridge : They were convicted of smuggling valuable drugs from Nova Scotia.

Orrawa, April 9.—A despatch has been received from the colonial office stating that the Spanish Government has decided that the direct trade between the Spanish Antilles and Canada is placed on the same footing as between those colonies and the United States. Orders have been given that the export duty wrongfully levied on goods sent to Canada from those islands sh- ll be returned. Lonpon, April 9.—The steamships Mon- tebello and Romeo put out from Hull docks lust night and anchored in the roads. Two companies of dragoons escorted the crews to the tenders. ‘he police tried to keep the mob bark, but the strikers broke through the lines repeatedly and stoned the s:ldiers and sailors. The dragoons beat the strikers back with the butts of their lances. Several policemen and dragocns were in- jured with stones and about a dozen strik- ers were carried from the scene by their comrades. At the docks the crews were placed on the tenders and proceeded to the Montebello and Romeo. The steamships sailed this morning.

Vienna, April 10,—Great excitement has been caused by an attempt to assassinate Cardinal Vaszary, primate of Huogary. He and his secretary were attacked by a well dressed young man armed with aknife. The cardinal evaded the thrust of the assassin, but his secretary received two severe stab wounds. The would-be murderer was arrested. Heap pears to be a fanatic.

Boston, April 9 —The boiler makers and iron ship builders usion voted to-night to strike in every shop in Boston, East Boston, Boston and Cambridge, toemorrow Itis expected that seven hundred and fifty men will goout, The fight is for the nine hour work day. Last year a similar strike was in progress for three months, but nought was accomplished, The work on the U.S cruiser Marblehead at the works of Harrison Loring, South Boston, and other government contracts wil! be tied up. The struggle will be a long and bitter one.

Apri! 9.—Judge Jette rendered judgment yesterday in the case of Thompson vs, Senecal, the minister of justice havio taken action against the ex-superinteadent 2 the printing bureau, Ottawa, to recover $14,- 307, which Nenecal had received as commis- sions from different parties for supplying the department. His honor took the ground that the defendant was an agent rather than an employe, consequently the law justified the dismisssal of the case since the government had lost nothing by the transactions. Judge Jette remarked, however, that action was reprehensible and punishable by criminal law
