“We have only one language on board the boat in time of emergency,” he declared, “and that is what we term the boot language. It never fails. When a storm arises or anything else happens to cause speedy action on the part of the crew, the officers of the ship don’t try to talk. They make a few motiens with their hands, and if these don’t suffice, they employ the boot language. As you may readily guess, this is simply a series of kicks. One kick, well administered, beats a whole encyclopedia with men who don’t understand the language in which the encyclopedia is printed, and so we manage to get through. But I’ve often wondered what would happen to the ship if paralysis of the lower limbs should happen to set in among the officers.”—Philadelphia Inquirer.

Captain Rulon, of the Munyon Com- pany, Tells Some of His Varied

Experience.

The Elliott house has had as a guest durin8 the last week an ex-American military officer who has had an experince in the United States army such as any man might well be proud of, The gentleman is Captain Rulon, who has been here looking after the sale of Munyon remedies, he being the travelling representa- tive of the Munyon Company. No finer specimen of soldier could one wish or expect to see than this traveller. He is but middle aged, with an erect carriage, showing to ad- vantage the well-built form of more than six feet, Ife comes of an old French Huguenot family, his forefathers having gone to the Untted States to settle in 1682,

Starting as a private in the 114th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, at the outbreak of the war between the North and South, he was three times premoted for gallantry on the field of battle during the war, holding in turn the offices of sergeant, Ist lieutenant, 2nd lieu- tenant, and captain. One of the most dearly- prized treasures which Captain Rulon has is the following letter, written on parchment, but now faded, which was given to him the day he mustered out of his regiment :—

Philadelphia, June 25th, 1865, To whom it may concern :

Capt. Harry E. Roulon, of Co.. B., 114th Regt. Pennsylvania Vols., is an officer known to me as one of worthand merit. He enlisted in my regiment as a private soldier, and was three times promoted for distinguished gal- lantry, viz. ; Fredericksburg, Chancellonsville, and Gettysburg, and always bore an irreproach- able reputation. I know no officer of my command whom I can recommend more high- ly or with greater pleasure than Captain Rulon.

ing his sword he threw it away, and broke his revolver, the only other arms he had, the remnants of which were handed over to a Confederate officer who had seen him, and who afterward proved to be Lieut. Col. Jas. Fairfax, of General Longstreet’s staff, who showed great kindness to Captain Rulon, when, by accident, he found the latter was a brother Mason.

Following the capture, the captain was taken to Libby prison, and while in captivity he

was, unaware to himself, promoted to captain, which news he learned months after, when he was released.

Capt. Rulon’s many other war experiences

are quite as Interesting as the one reiated, and he isa man with whom it is a decided pleas- ure to have a talk. As a raconteur he could scalcely be beaten, and when a Mail and Em- pire reporter ran across him on Saturday, it was with pleasure that the genial captain’s narratives were listened to. In peace he seems to have been quite as successful as in war, but success to a sociable, intelligent and warm-hearted man like Captain Rulon is only what is his due.
