sheath { A Ricn Discovery,-—Mr, James Rourke was in the city last evening, and on his way lhome from Boston, where he had been having yan analysis made of some gold and silver quartz, recently discovered on the property of Wm. Baleoo, at Westport, St, John county. The result of the examination proved that both gold and silver exist in paying quantities in the mine. In a ton of the silver quartz 324 ounces, valued at $32.50, while in a ton ot the other sample, one ounce of gold, valued at $20.67, was found. Mr. Rourke will proceed at once to form a company for the develop- ment of the mine. Some city gentlemen have already asked for stock in the proposed com- pany.— St. John Telegraph.

Tuk CHamption Mean May.—The chany pion mean man has been found in Vermont. A young lady went into a dentist’s office a few days ago, and had her teeth examined, the doctor reporting them badly decayed, but, by quite an outlay of money he could put them in good shape, The young lady departed, saying she would report to her husband and call again in a few days. She did so, and on her second eall, she was ac- companied by her father, the latter telling the dentist to go ahead with the job, and he would pay the bill. Thinking the den- tist might wonder why he was paying the bill, the father explained that the husband had said his wife’s teeth decayed befure he married her, and he was not going to pay for fixing them up, her father ought to do it.

The Fire This Morning.

Suorr ty before three o'clock this morn- ing, watchman Merchant, while going his rounds, made the alarming discovery that the Cameron Block was on fire. He at once gave the alarm.+ In five minutes or less from the first clang of the bell a stream of water was pouring into the premises. But it was exceedingly difficult to ** locate ” the seat of the fire. Smoke was issuing from every window in the large building. So dense and hot was it that the firenien could not enter the building for the pur- pose of discovering the burning part. The Chief Engineer, however, soon came to the conclusion that the fire had emanated from the restaurant known as * The Bijou.” The door at the back of the restaurant was broken open, a3 well as a window in the front, and four heavy streams were as quickly as possible tnrned upon that com- partment of the building, flooding the plac in a very short time. As soon as ? entrance could be effected, it was for that the fire had started in a clothes ¢}

Chief Emgineer Large and the pipéiiet™ fought their way through the blinding smoke into the immediate vicinity of the fire, and by their strenuous exertions soyg succeeded in getting the fames under con- trol. By five o’clgck the fire was com- pletely extinguished, and the firemen left tor their homes.

The damage to the building by fire is in the region of the closet in which the fire started, and along the walls through into Taylor’s store.

All the stock and furniture in the confee- tionery and restaurant is much damaged by water and fire, and everything about the premises is topsy turvy in consequence.

The closet iu the restaurant, and in which the fire started, contained, in addition to the clothing therein, about $40 in cash, which Mrs. McDonald had placed there on Saturday evening, and which she over- looked removing when leaving the store.

The heat of the fire while making its way through into Taylor's store cracked a large plate-glass mirror, which had to be after- wards removed in order to allow the hose to play on the burning wall behind. Some of the jewelry, etc., in the show cases and drawers was dataaged by the fire, and nearly everything in the store was more or less injured by smoke. The store was also flooded with water.

The cellar of Reddin’s Drug Store was flooded with water, and some of the cigars, etc., therein were damaged, A good deal of the goods in the store were also some- what smoked.

Scott’s barber shop was also flooded with water ana the furniture had to be removed.

The stock and fixings in ‘*The Bijou” are insured in one of the companies repre- sented by Mr. Urquhart for $300. This sum will not, it is estimated, go very far towards covering Mr. Macdonald’s loss.

Mr. Taylor has his stock and furni- ture insured in the Commercial Union and British American Companies, represented by Mr. Urquhart for $2,000 in each. His loss is therefore more than covered by in- surance.

Mr. Reddin js also, we understand, in- sured.

The origin of the fire is unknown.

The great value of the waterworks in cases of fire was plainly evident. The use- lessness of the fire bell as a means of alarm- ing citizens was also painfully apparent. Several of the firemen never heard a sound of the bell, and many of those whose pro- perty was in danger did not know anything about the fire till aroused from their slum- bers by special messengers. The sooner we have an electric alarm the better for the public in general.

Messrs. Taylor and Macdonald desire to return their sincere thanks to Chief En- gineer Large and his firemen for their good work during the progress of the fire,

— The Boston Traveiler remarks: Eng- land, true to her great history, exacts for her flag every right guaranteed to it by treaty and international law. Believing it to be time to notify Germany that its game to control Samoa is understood, she informs Bismarck distinctly that he must play the game po further. The tone and authority of Britain in this matter cause Americans to regret that their own government seems somewhat behind tfme in asserting the dignity and rights of the nation.

—The latest gift ofthe Queen to her peo- ple is received as a wost gracious and gen- erous act. She has bequeathed nearly the whole of the jubilee gifts received by her last year, tothe nation. The collection will continue to be open to public inspec- tion at Windsor, till, at a future time, it is transferred to some public institution, probably the South Kensington Museum. As a memogial of the present reign, and, as
