Tewerrance.—We |are pleased to learn that since Sunday last no less than eight hundred and twenty of the parishoners of Miscouche took the T. A. pledge from the Rev. R. B. McDonald. We also learn that the Catholic 'T. A. Union has at present over five thousand me:nbers.

Tue Readings in St. Patrick’s Hall last evening under the auspices of the St. Joseph’s Total Abstinence Society, passed off very succeasfully. The attendance was small, but the readings, music and recitations merited a better house.

THe market of to-day is very small. The prices are as follows: hay per 100 Ibs. 75 to 85 cents ; geese, 50 to 65 cents each ; oatmeal, $2.75 to $3.25 per 100 lbs. ; but- ter (fresh), 25 to 28 cents per lb.; butter (tub), 19 to 21 cents per lb. ; beef (per qr.), 5 to 8 cents per lb.

Drownep at Sea.—During a heavy sea John Crockford, of Pictou, fell from the topsail yard of the P. E. Island brig Zerlina, and was drowned. The Zerlin« made the voyage from Pictou to Queens- town in 12 days—one of the quickest pass- ages on record.

Tue Ceeam or THE BUTTER FOR THE Banx.—George A. Cochrane & Co., butter and cheese merchants of Monireal, have failed, with liabilities estimated at between $250,000 and $309,000. The Bank of Tor- onto has advanced $220,000 on a cargo of butter shipped recenily by George A. Coch- rane to Anderson & Sons, of Montreal. As the Bank holds a lien upon the butter it is not likely to lose much by Cochrane’s failure.

Go.p.— Advices from the Cariboo mining district in British Columbia, continue of the most favorable nature. New quartz lodes are being daily struck and the rock is of a singularly uniform character. Build- ing in Victoria is projected and already commenced on an unusually large scale. A number of miniug companies have been in- corporated in this city to operate in Cari- boo.

S. or T.—-We see by the King’s County Advertiser that the ‘‘Diamond ofthe Desert’ Division, No. 9, of the Sons of Temperance in Georgetown, now in its 29th year, has taken afresh start. The officers was duly elected and installed. On Tuesday evening a public meeting was addressed in the Di- vision Room, by the G. W. P., J. J. Chap- pell; P. G. W. P., Wm. Sanderson, and several other members of the order. Ap- propriate singing, interspersed the addres- ses. We trust that this Division, together with the Club and the Catholic Temper- ance Society, will speedily attain the great object for which they are all instituted.

Lare Suipments.—Hon. J. C. Pope’s barque Plevna sailed from Georgetown for Queenstown on the 7th inst., with a cargo consisting of 46,500 bushels of oats, 5,500 feet of boards and 60 pieces of deal, shipped by J. Duncan & Co. The schooner Marie also sailed from Georgetown for St. John’s, Nfid., on the 8th inst., with 2,840 bushels of oats, 870 bushels ef potatoes, 63 bushels of barley, 23 bushels of turnips, 24 carcasses of pork, 55 do. beef, 260 do. of mutton, 257 geese, 11 turkeys, 24 fowl, 6 tubs of butter. The above cargo is valued at $3,189, and was shipped by Charles Haszard, Esq.

To the Editor of the Examiner:

Sir,—In your issue of Tuesday appeared a most ill-natured article upon tle management of the Citizens’ Skating Rink, and in which are contained gross inaccuracies. ‘The writer refers to the downfall of the old Rink, ac- celerated, as he says, by the clamoring jealousy of a few persons, the summit of whose ambition was to be Directors of the Rink, and whose success in the management of the Hillsboro’ Boating Club, rendered them fully competent for the ofiice to which they aspired. As one of the Directors, I know of nothing in our managemeut of the affairs of either Society that I am ashamed of. In one point certainly the H. B. C. was similar to the old Rink, viz. : in the sinking of money ; but in the case of the former the loss was paid entirely from the pockets of the Directors, who were unfortuna- tely swindled by a musical vagabond, where- as in the case of the latter, grossly miscon- ducted not only in the management but in the construction, the loss fell upon shareholders like myself, who now have the grim satisfac- tion of seeing a building costing about $8009, rotting slowly but surely away, weighed down, perhaps, with the load of home-made iron plates, manufactured expressly to support the patent roof.

The H. B. C. gave two days’ regatta, two promenade concerts and a_ ball, the like of which had never been witnessed in Charlotte- town, and the loss sustained was borne by the Directors themselves. The Honorary Com- mittee, consisting of the Chief Justice, Hons. Joseph Pope, L. H. Davies, A. A. MacDon- ald, W. W. Sullivan, and other prominent gentlemen, after learning the full facts of the case, generously offered to bear their share of the loss, but the Directors declined, for which, I maintain, they deserve credit.

As for the remarks of your correspondent upon the bad management last season, they are not correct. No complaints were made to the Directors regarding the misconduct to which he refers. His statement that the Di- rectors declared a dividend of 20 per cent. and that they have bought up all the shares among themselves, is untrue also.

I dare say that the price of visitors’ tickets will be reduced, but the others I consider by no means too high, and I can assure him that they will not be lowered on account of the ‘‘clamoring jealousy” of a ‘Father of Fair Daughters,” the mother of whom has no speci- fic identity.

THERE was but one trial before the Sti- pendiary Magistrate this morning—John Walsh, farmer, drunk and incapable, was fined $2 or 8 days.

Captain A. H. Bogardus, New York, un- dertook and successfully accomplished the feat, of breaking 5,000 glass balls inside of 500 consecutive minutes. He had 19 min- utes and 25 seconds to spare after breaking them. The feat took place at Gulmore’s Garden, and great crowds were present throughout, and Bogardus was loudly ap- plauded.

Tue store of Mr. A. B. Outerbridge was entered on Sunday night by some evil dis- posed person, who relieved the tills of their contents, and also helped himself to a win- ter’s supply of tobacco, cigars, &c. The thief effected his entrance in the rear of the shop by climbing up on the shed or porch and raising one of the upstair windows. —
