Island, during which he took in the exhibition, races, etc, Mr. Vanbuskirk says the show was the best he has seen anywhere in the provinces and was superior tu any he had ever before seen on the Island.

New Haven, Conn , Oct. 13.

At the invitation of the New Haver Chamber of Commerce, Erastus Winall spoke to-night on Reciprocity, the new hope of New England. He said New Eng- land’s hope lies in reciprocity between tho United States and Canada, “The vast ma- jority of the people in Canada are in fayor of the closest trade relations with the United States. This sentiment will be greatly strengthened by the vpera- tion of the McKinley Bill, in doubling the duty on their exports. The parliamen- tary elections will soon come off, and if Congress will express the same desire to trade freely with the North as with the South, and enact the Sherman proposal, the Liberal party of Canada will carry the day and a government will come into power in the Dominion whose policy, instead of being one of restriction and hostility to- ward the United States, will be one of harmony and good will. Thus will be secured the co-operation towards the crea- tion of the mutual ofinterest, the advan- tage of which to England and the whole country no one can tell.

The Wreck of the Melmerby.

New Gtascow, N. S., Oct. 14.

All day yesterday the wrecked barque Melmerby, which was stranded at Little Harbor, was watched from the beach. On account of the terrible sea no service could be rendered the four men on the wreck, whocould be seen moving about on the ship. At noon to-day, the sea having abated suf- ficiently to render aa attempt at rescue pos- sible, Captain P. Graham, with a boats crew consisting of Daniel Fraser, William and Dr. McLean, of New Glasgow, Jas. Me- Glashen, of Big Island, and a man from Descousse whose tather was on the wreck,

put off and reached the stern of the wreck, and the ship-wrecked men were successfully lowered into it and brought safely to land. The four rescurd to-day

consist of the stewaid, the captain of the schooner taken on board as a pilot, and the two men, Kane aad Evans.

Sugar Refinery Prospectus.

Hatirax, Oct. 14, The a coe is issued of the Halifax Sugar Refinery (limited), capital £150,000 in 30,000 shares of £5 each. The Company is formed in England for the purchase of the Woodside Refinery at Halifax, which is capable of producing 80 tons of refined sugar er day. It is proposed to pay £60,- 000 for the Woodside property, £4,000 in cash and the balance in shares for cash. The Halifax solicitors are Borden, Vichie, Parker & Chisholm, and W. L. Lowell &

Co. are receiving applications for shares.

Fisheries Conference.

Grovucester, Mass., Oct. 14.

Hon. Robert Bond, Colonial Secretary of Newfoundland, held an audience to-day at the Board of Trade rooms with Presi- dent Smith and other prominent men con- nected with the fisheries. The object was to submit a proposition for admitting the produce of the Newfoundland fisheries free, and in return the American fishermen would have free access for bait and other outfits at Newfoundland ports.

Norwegian Barque Wrecked.

Aspy Bay, C. B., Oct. 14.

The Norwegian barque Marie, of Chris- tiana, forty-four days out from Barrow-in- Furness for Charlottetown, P. E.1., with art cargo of steel rails, was wrecked on North Harbor Beach on Sunday morning, at six o'clock, in the gale. The crew nar- rowly escaped. The ship will be a total wreck.

He Led A Double Life. MonTREAL, Oct. 14. A great scandal has been caused here by Rer. Mr Creichits’ resignation from the Can- ning Street Presbyterian Church. It came out that the Rev. gentleman, who is a widower, was keeping a woman on the other side of the

line. She had a child in September, The Ulunda Sails. Hairax, Oct. 14. A deapatch from Westport says that the

Ulunda left there at 10 o'clock this morn- ing, steaming about about five knots and making very little.

Sir,—Yesterday, Oct. 14th, as teams from Rocky Peint drove on the steamer Southport for the city, those who were in charge were informed that they would have to discharge and go home, or stay in the city all night, as the steamer would leave at 83 o'clock. Now, Mr. Editor, we ask who is responsible for this sudden change of time table ? Surely, after waiting most of the summer for the steamers to
