BIOHAZARD

Hey. there, fellow Bio’s! Welcome back to another fun-filled semester of academia, hope you’re enjoying it so far. Well, here’s a little something to break the monotony; a bit of humour from one of our witty lab techs. | finally got this joke at Christmas dinner after hearing it about 10 times. So give yourself a little time and maybe you'll see the humour in it, too. Here it is:

“Did ya hear about the sequel to Silence

of the Lambs? They're filming it in Newfoundland. It’s going to be called ‘Ewe’s Be Quiet’.”

Hmm...now that | see it in print, it really is a stupid joke. Anyway, to paraphrase a certain Ecology 302 professor after a joke of similar calibre, “onwards and upwards, folks” (secretly, | love writing this column so | can write these evil little things, but if | get kicked out of university for it, the smile is going to be on the other side of my face).

Now, on with slightly more important things.

Let's hit the slopes, folks. Anyone interested in an evening of skiing at Mt. Brookvale? Sure you are, it'll be fun. We're going to head out on Wednesday evening (January 19) sometime after supper. Check the board in the Bio Club for our time of departure. Don’t have a car? Not a good enough reason not to come...we'll find you aride. We'll renta U-Haul if we have to. If you want to come (or even if you're going out already), sign up in the Bio-Club so that we all can get a group discount. Maybe if we look

really pathetic afterwards, someone will take us in for hot chocolate (Erin?).

FIRST AID and CPR COURSE: The Bio Club is sponsoring an emergency fist aid with adult CPR and baby-saver CPR course on Saturday (January 22) from about 8:45am until 4:30pm. It’s only going to cost $25 to take the course and become certified (compared to the normal $50 price). There are only 30 spots available, so get up to the club and sign up! Instead of having it on the cold old floors of Duffy, we're holding it in the nice warm Panther Lounge. Don’t forget to bring a lunch and to dress comfortably (ie. gym pants)! We needa deposit of $10 by Thursday (January 20) to hold your spot, Talk to Chris Ripley or Denise Vanderra if you have any questions.

The BIO BASH was temporarily put on hold for two weeks due to reasons beyond our control. The new date is this Friday (January 28) around 7:30 pm. We're hopefully going to have a band playing, so it'll be kind of like one of those awesome Wednesday Night Jams, except on a Saturday night instead. Don't worry, there'll still be free BEvERages and drink specials all night long for members!!! Don’t miss ‘THE BASH’ at the Panther Lounge this Saturday! RAFFLE TICKETS! Our poor foster child is starving! The Bio Club is having a Texas Mickey raffle to help continue our sponsorship. The tickets are $2 each or 4 for

$5 and the prize is either a Texas Mickey or $100 cash. And wait...there’s even something in it for you! We are going to have prizes for the people who sell the most tickets. First place will be $40, second is $20, and third is $10. Plus, everyone who sells more than 5 tickets will be eligible to win some free pizzas! Now is that inspiration to fund raise or what?! Come up to the Bio Club or see Denise or Chris to get tickets and details. Thank you to all the people who took some tickets at the meeting...it really is for a good cause, one the Bio Club couldn’t support without your

And speaking of support...the Atlantic Universities Undergrad Biology Conference is coming to UPEI in March arid we need volunteers to help out. Basically, the AUUBC is a conference that gives students doing undergrad research a chance to present their work to their peers. So, if you are interested in doing an honours next year or pursuing a masters, this will be an excellent chance to see what’s going on out there in the research community. About 150 students and faculty are coming here from across the Maritimes to participate. We need people to help by

introducing speakers, people to drive a shuttle bus, people to operate the projectors, people _

to help put the conference programme together, etc. There is a more complete list with a description of each job up in the Bio Club, along with a sign up sheet. For more information, track down Chris Ripley, Andrew MacInnis, or Dr. Larry Hale and we'll rope you into a job!
