The Poor of New York.

The New York Herald says: ‘‘ It was recently declared in a convention of char- itable agents that ‘ sufficient money was annually subscribed in America to meet the requirements of the deserving poor,’ yet the fact is palpable to every traveller in the streets of New York that there is one place in America at least where the deserv- ing poor do not get all they require. Star- vation even is by no means an unheard of event in our midst, and it ought to be re- membered that every death from hunger amongst us is an indictment against the rest of the city for murder in the first de- gree. If hundreds of past cases never came to trial; ifthe indictments are pigeon- holed by the district attorney of heaven, it will be because the city does all it can to prevent a repetition of the crime. Already the army of the poor is perceptibly on the increase, before even the first snowflake has touched the pavement. Those who for inonths past have slept in the open air now need some sort of shelter for their ill- clothed limbs, and those who lie sick and shivering on their beds, want wood and coal to warm their wretched rooms.

Lord Beaconsfield’s new book in three velumes, ‘‘ Endymion,” treats of politival events about the time of the death of Can- ning, A. D., 1842. The Standard, review- ing the work, says: ‘* It is a politica] narra- tive which it will probably be thought has less plot and dramatic interest than almost any of even Lord Beaconsfield’s novels. Among the characters supposed to figure in the novel under varieus pseudonyms, are John Bright, Lord Palmerston, Lord Elcho Lord Melbourne, Baron de Rothschild, and Louis Napolean. It is doubtful whether a deliberate perusal of the novel will enable to identify the hero, ‘‘ Endymion” with any political personage, but the manner in which Lady Montford places herselfgand her fortunes at the disposal of *‘ Endymion” will suggest to many an incident in Lord Beaconstield’s early public career.”

The Board of Foreign Missions of the eastern section of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, met in Rev. Ephraim ‘Scett’s Church, New Glasgow, N. 8., on the 24th inst. The principal item of business was the appointment of a fourth Missionary to Trinidad. Aftera lengthy discussion, Rev. J. W. Macleod was finally chosen. Mr. Macleod is a native of North River, near Truro, is about 26 years of age, and was licensed by the Presbytery of Truro, only ten days since. He will be ordained by the Presbytery of Halifax, and leave im- mediately afterwards for his field of labor.

The Secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society writes: ‘‘Itis to be feared that there is little hope that war between Egypt and Abyssinia will be long averted. News has reached me from undoubted authority that orders aye been issued from Cairo to drive back Abyssinians by force. Two thousand troops are at Kener and a battalion has been sent to Swanit. Itis stated that 16,000 suldiers have left Cairo. The King is con- vinced that Egypt intends to attack him and has issued orders that all Mussulmans must leave the country or be baptised.”}

The government of Italy proposes to do honor to the late King Victor Eminanuel by the erection of a monument in Rome, which is to cost $1,800,000. The mora- ment is to be commemorative of the career and achievements of the King as the foun- der and first sovereign of a united Italy.

Thomas Summers, of Seven Oaks, Kent, England, married a Cleveland lady in Canada, eight years ago, when he had a wife (whom he married under ago) and three children in the Old Country. He has since been leading a dissipated lifg in Cleveland, and shot himself on Sunday morning on the doorstep of the house where his last wife lives. He rang the door bell atthe moment he fired the shot, and wasfound by Madame Summers.

The Great Eastern Fresh Meat Com- pany (limited), with a capital of £300,000, has been formed. It proposes to bring carcases from both North and South America, and for this purpose the steam- ship ‘‘ Great Eastern” has been fitted up with refrigerating appliances. One hun- dred and fifty thousands pounds of the stock of the company is offered for publie subscription.
