NEW YORK iAP)—-—'Iihe that can cure cancer is probably already known.

It is one among about 1.000.000 known organic chemicals whose formulas have been worked out over the years. Chemistry cook- books tell how to make them again.

But the situation is like having a million keys to a lock and. worse yet. no clear conception of what {the lock looks like.

' Liaborious trial-and-error ies: ing‘of thousands of chemicals against an im al cancers has turned up a couple dozen druus which do or t ' hu- man cancers. They kill or poison cancer cells. but unhappin not without some s i m i l a r effects upon healthy cells. or they have other drawbacks.

Now scientists are on the trail of new methods toward finding the effective key or keys. The lock. they believe, involves a “wayward gene" directing cells to follow an abnormal destiny.

A curative drug might act In any of several ways.

CHEMICALQ MAY BE FOUND As the elaborate mechanisms of cell behavior become clearer. then specific chemicals might . or tailored. right the wrong steps taken in the cancer cell. It would well be chemical first formulated many Eyears ago. with its capability, still unknown.

A few drugs winning some benefits against cancers an; known to act in fliis fashion. An antibiotic, actinomycin D. as- parenfly combines with a spe- cific part of the DNA thus in- terfering with transcription 0! the genetic message. Dr. Ben- .dlc-h explains. But it probably 'acts against all DNA, not just that of cancer cells.

And a newer class of drugs. the hydroxyl amines. invades cells to chop the DNA strands just at certain places.
