Lavewir Tayior, the great. travel- ler, who will lecture in the Young Men’s Christian Association Hall, on Tuesday even- ing, exhibited to representatives of the Press, at Wagstaff’s Hotel to-day, a number of in- teresting charts of recent excavations in Jera- salem ; views of various points to which he will refer in his lecture, as well as a fac simile of the inscription upon the famous Rosette stone. The Daily News, discussing the proposed amendments to the Land Bill in the Lords, | says: ‘‘The obstruction offered to Liberal | measures will continue so long as the con- | stitution of the House of Lords secures the presence of an overwhelming Tory majority | whatever may be the preponderence of Liberal opinion in the country. The modi- fieation of the second Chamber is a ques- tion which the Lerds are rapidly bringing inte the range of practical politics.”

The Liberal leaders in the Lords, except Granville, had a conference with Gladstone to-day to ascertain what amendments to the Land bill the Government are willing te accept. Granville was present in the House of Lords to-day, although he had to be wheeled to his seat. Lord Denmore’s motion, of which he gave notice on Tues- day, for the rejection of the Land bill of the House going into committee to-day, was rejected without a division.

In the Central Criminal Court, Patrick Talfourd Hickie was found guilty of threat- ening tokill Hon. W. E. Forster, unless he released the Irish prisoners and resigned the chief secretaryship for Ireland; the verdict was accompanied with a recommendation to mercy. The counsel fer the Crown said Mr. Forster desired that the lightest sen- tence consistent with justice might. be given. Thesentence was pestponed.

In the Lords, to-day, the first amendment to the Land Bill, providing for execution from the operation of the bill of parts of estates mansged on the English system, was adopted without division. The amend- ment stood in the name of the Duke of

of 219 to 67, giving the landlord a right to compensation in case of the sale of a hald- ing of whieh he had formerly bought up the tenant right. An amendment offered by Earl Donoughmere (Conservative) to clause of the Land Bill limiting compensation for disturbance to £250, which was opposed by the Geyernment, was carried. The Duke of Argyll voted with the yinerity. Salis- bury's amendment that the words ‘‘ The court should have reference to interests of tenant and landlord respectively,’’ be struck out, was carried.

Lord Landsdowne’s amendment to strike eut the words ‘prohibiting court from entering a proposal for resumption of any part of holding for any purpose ether than for providing for laborere cottages and gardens dyring the statuary term,” was earried.
