Gov't Hands Out Booklet On Rules For Small Boats

OTTAWA (CP)~«The transport department has distributed “well over" 100,000 copies of its pack~ aged rules and reconunendations tor small-boat operators, an of- ﬁcial Wednesday.

About 200,000 copies or! the 40- nage b o o k l e t, entitled Safety Aﬂoat, were printed.

Mr. Hamilton said in reply to a question that he is not certain whether there will be revision OI the recommendations governing boat overloads as a result of the recent Lake Sirncoe drowning of ﬁve RCMP officers.

There "unfortunately" was no compulsion on this matter of rec- ommended load limits.

The regulations include this section on otfences:

“Every person who navigates or operates any vessel or any water skis, surf board, water sled or other towed object on the in- land, minor or other waters of Canada, in a manner that is dangerous to navigation, life or limlb, having regard to all cir- cumstnces including the nature and conditions of such waters and the use that at the time is or might reasonably be enpectedto he made of such waters, is guilty of an offence.”

Another section makes it an oi- ience to operate a vessel while impaired by alcohol or a drug. It'is also an otfence to retuse to stop and provide name and ad- dress if involved in a boating ac- cident.

In each of the three cases, as well as tor refusing to obey any order given by a police officer in connection with the regula- tions, the offence is punishable by a fine of up 1303500 or six months in jail.
