They do not hear sounds distinctly, and, of course, they cannot imitate sounds accurately. Defects in| the teeth are a great cause of this la- mentable calamity inthe young, and this is a fresh reason for avoiding quack applications of so-called dentists and keeping to pure: seap and water io cleaning the teeth.

French officials are carrying things with a high hand on the coast of New- foundland, where the French have con- current rights of fishing. They pretend that their right is an exclusive one, and they enforce their pretention by main strength. But afew weeks ago a New- foundland fishing vessel, operating on the coast where the French also have a right to fish, was visited by a French man-ot-war, the fish, caught thrown overboard, aud the vessel's trawls des- troyed.
