Tae Richt Hon. Hugh C. E. Childers, Secretary of War, is in Ireland for the pur- pose of personally inspecting the country and obtaining information as to its condi- tion. It is good to hear of siatesmen try- ing to learn something definite about the

Ar a banquet recently given in his honor, the Postmaster General, speaking of the Pacific Railway, is reported to have said that the arrangements which had been en- tered into by the Syndicate meant the car- rying out of Sir John’s original plan, and stipulated that the road from one end to the other would be completed by 1890. He further remarked that the detajls of the contract with the Pacific Railway Syndicate would be submitted to Parliament for rati- fication in a few weeks, perhaps in a few days. This announcement is as important,

as it is satisfactory.

On the conclusion of the shooting, the Battery paraded in the Drill Shed, when the prizes were presented by Capt irving. An enthusiastic vote of thanks was passed to their many friends who had so kindly presented prizes for competition at this meeting.

Q. C. Rifle Association Meeting.

Tre fourth prize meeting of Queen's Co, Rifle Association, came off yesterday. There were $108 in cash competed for in in two matches—Ilst match at 200 and 300 yards and the 2nd at 500 yards. The day was favorable with the exception of a strong sross wind. A silver medal presented by the team representing the Island at Ottawa, both matches, a silver cruet stand presented by the President of the Association, to second aggregate, and a motroco cigarjcase, presented by Mr. C. D. Rankin, to the third. The following is a list of prize win- ners with their scores.

Hicuway Ronpery.-—Oa Monday night an elderly man named William Bonnell, of New- foundiand fell among thieves, and was relieved of the handsome sum of fifty-five dollars, Mr. Bounell, arrived in this city a few days ago, and while passing through the streets yester- day, fell in with two strangers, who kept his company until a late hour last night. They conducted him to a quict part and while one held his arms the other extracted the above named amount and both fled. Bonnel reported the matter to the police, and gave a descrip- tion of the men. James Govdman, answered to the description of one. He was promptly arrested, and this morning at the Ntipendiary Magistrates Court, was remanded for exam- nation.
