Atex. Patrey and Timothy Brown, mem- bers of very respectable families, in Ottawa, have been living rather fast for some time without. any apparent source of income. Detective McVeity, when givena jewelry larceny case to work up against the boy who opened the shop, learned that these young gents had been frequent callers, and on visiting houses of ill-fame frequented by them, he found part of the stolen articles. He arrested his men and found more of the stolen. property on one of them. They were coinmited for trial.

The friends of Cuban independence in New York are at last obliged to admit that the island leaders have surrendered, and that the insurrection is at an end. They profess, however, to think that it will again be renewed. The New York Sw calls the event a disgrace to the United States, which should long ago have recognized ‘‘Free Cuba,” and says that the result has been brought about by treachery on the part of sume of the leaders. Other ac- counts, however, say that a leading cause was a departure by the Spaniards from their old custom of shooting on the spot every “patrivt’” whom they captured. For sone time back they have been acting on a differ- ent plan, and have been holding out amnesty and safety as an inducement to the ingurgents to coms in. Recent events in Madrid have greatly assisted them in creat- ing a favorable impression, and now the
