Cuba’s Troubles.

The New York World's Madrid spcial of the 14h itst. says:—The Aguero incident

_has hada wonderful effect upon the Span-

ish press and people. There is no dia- guising the fact that the rising caused by this edventurer ia one end of Cuba has seriously disturbed the finanvial and com- fercial interests of Spain, and has led tea crisis which is now ‘regarded with painful anxiety here. Of course the hidalgoes do not fear the capture of the island by such irreguiars as Aguero can enroll, but they dread the interference that any filibuster from the United States may be able te exercise among the impoverished planters of Cuba. Money has been wrung from Cuba for many years at the expense of home improvements that were necessary for keep- ing up the golden stream, and men who have invested all their wealth in Cuban

plantations and have seer it steadily dimin-

ish are hable to turn te even such a des- perate venture as partizanship with Aguero. This danger is fully recognised here and a change in the captain general- ship isimmisent. The home Government has become thoroughly dissatisfied with what it regards as the lack of sagacity and energy shown bp the present ruler of Cuba, Captain General Castello, and has deter- mined te remove him. It is understood that Captain General F. De Rivera, present Governor General of the Phillipine Islands, will be sent to Ouba in @asrello’s place. The Spanish Government will, it is said, impress upon Rivera the necessity of im- mediately establishing a strung autocratic rule in Cuba. He is fitted by nature and disposition for carrying out any such in- structions. The rumor prevails in Madrid that an American syndicate which, in 1876, sent a police commissioner from New York to Spain to negotiate for the purchase of Spain's interest in Cuba, has been revived. The story is that Alfonso was at first in- clined to listen favorabiy to the American proposal, which contained an offer of enough millions to tempt the consumptive Spanish treasury. This rumor explains the final rejection of the proposition on the ground of the influence from Berlin, exerted, it is alleged, because of German ambition to maintain its new ally’s position on the American continent for future conveni- enee’ in the carrying out of the Colonial enterprise upon which Germany has re- solved.

A Most Singular Law Case.

A peculiar and unprecedented case wad argued before Mr. Dalton, at Osgoode Hail, Toronto, on the 10th inst. The case was that of Stuart & McPherson, vs. McKim & Clarke, garnishee. Walker, for Stuart & McPherson, wholesale grocers of Hamilton, moved avsolute garnishee. A summons was granted three weeks ago, J. G. Scott, Q. C., appeared for Robert McKim, M. P. P. Judgment for debtor annd Hon. Charles Clarke, Speaker of the Legislative Assem- bly. The facts are that the Hamilton firm

have recovered a judgment for some 1,300 against Mr. McKim, which remains unsatisfied, and they have

attached and seek to have paid over to them the $1,000 received from Wilkin- son and placed by McKim in the hands of the Speaker for safe-keeping, aud after- wards impounded by a resolution of the House. Scott stated that he did not sup- pose, utder the circumstances, that any order would be made about the $1,000 till the Housé had acted in s¢éme way. He suggest- ed that the motion should stand ‘enlarged till the next meeting of the Legislature. Walker thought the proper course would be to direct an issue to be tried as to the own- ship of the $1,000.° Dalton seemed to be of the opinion, as.a matter of law, that money could be received by McKim from the Spraker and was therefore garnishab’e. Upon this view being expressed, Scott asked for a week’s enlargement, as he was not prepared ‘to argue the legal question involved. The motion was then enlarged a week.

Another Sad and Sudden Death.

The Halifax Chronicle says:— Many resi- dents of the North End were startled, on Sunday evening, to hear the announcement of the'death ot Mrs. John A. Wilson, nee Miss Sarah Smith, daughter of Mr. D. J. Smith, of Lockman Street.’ M¢. and Mrs. Wilson were down town for a walk in the afternoon, and she was then in her usual health. Later he left her playing at the piano while he again went out for a short time. It seems that she arose from the piano about dusk, and in the dark stumbled over a little footstec! and upset a bird cage. The shock so -startied her that . she staggered and barely reached a couch. A younger sister hastily summoned her father- in-law from another part of the house and restorative means were applied, but in less than ten minutes she expired im their arms. Heart disease was undoubtedly the cause,

as she had been more or leas troubled; with

it for some time, but, she was.also in a delicate condition. The deceased was an estimable and accomplished young lady, and had a large circle of friends. She was only married !ast summer, and Mr. Wilson, who is ehipping clerk. a the suger refivery, has a hest of sympathisers in his sal and sudden bereavement. Mrs. W. was & sister-in-law of Mr. Henry Blackadar, of the Recorder.

The newest thing in incubators is one that. hatches out the little chickens by the aid of electricity. The nest or basket is filled. with fine hay, upon which the eggs are laid. The cover is a thick layer of soft down, attached to a round box con- taining coils of wire, These are heated by an electric current, whose temperature is regulated by a thermometer placed on the cover. . When the heat becomes too great the rise of the mercury cuts the coils out of the current and allows them to cool.

All the attention required is to sprinkle}

and turn the eggs once a day, and this oP may be performed by cluck- work,

Judge—‘‘Prisoner at the bar, have you anything to say before judgment is passed upon you?’ Prisoner—*'I would entreat your Lordship to consider my counsel’s miserable speech for the defence as an ex- tenuating circumstance.”

Ralph Willingham, a noted desperado, known as the ‘Kissimmee Terror,” has been captured near Jacksonville, Fla., after a desperate resistance. He is regarded as one of the richest men in Florida, and is said to have killed five men. A reward of $2,500 was offered for his arrest.

Prince Bismarck is no admirer of elo- quenee. “itis with eloquent gentlemen,” he says, ‘‘as with Jadies who have small feet. They wear boots which are much too tight and always try to show their feet. So if anybody has the misfortune to be elo- qnent, his speeches are too long and too frequent.”

Archibald Forbes says, in an article on the reasons why he became war corres- pondent:—‘‘But ill-health cut off my soldiering days, and I had to lay down the sword for the pen. The pen kas kept me and mine ever since, yet indirectly the sword has furnished the greater share of our rations,”

I Leheve the Lansdowne estates are re- garded as something like a model property in Ireland. This being so, it is instructive to notice that the rental of Lord Lans- downe’s Limerick estates was last week re duced by the Commissioners by a trifle of 25 per cent.—from £2,400 to £1,800.— Loudon Truth,

The growth of correspondence in Russia is pointed out in Moscow Guzelte by the fol- lowing statistics:—In the year 1878, 81,- 337,171 stamps at different prices were sold; in L879, 90,609,028; in 1880, 98,503,- $74; in 1881,106, 283 222, and in 1882, 114,287,377. Of the latter 71,289,358 were seven-copeck stamps, for foreign postage.

Samuel W. Baker, the African explorer, is quoted as saying that camels will cross a desert with a load of 400 pounds at the ratefof 30 miles a day, in the burning heat of summer, and require water only every third or fourth day. In the cooler months the animal will work seven or eight days without water, and if grazing on greco foliage without labor, will only drink once a fortnight.

There is nothing of that kind in Germany, where the beer is. pure, and kept for one year after it is made. In the United States it is not only adulterated, but is ‘‘jerked out” to tipplers when it fs Only a month old. It is asserted thet the picric acid which is used to give the beer a pungent taste is very injurious to the kidneys and other organs,

Prince Edward of Saxee Weimar will suc- ceed General Steele in command of a)l the troops in Ireland, if the Government gives its consent. The Queen and the Duke of Cambridge desire to give him the appoint- ment, but the consent of the Government is doubtful owing to probable opposition in parliament. Tiis Gerwan Prince, a rela- tive of the Queen, was born in 1829, entered the army in 1841, was a major general in 1868, general in 1879, has been A. D. ©. tu the Queen, appointed to the com- mand of the home district im 1870, and for the last five years has commanded the southern district.; With so many reall able generals unemployed, Prince Edward’s appointment to Ireland would be very un- populat.”

Bob Burdette, the humourist, writes of his workshop :—I sit down in my pleasant den this morning in a cheerful frame of mind, with a heart a8 light as acork. It is a pleasant den, this lonely lair of mine, It makes a visitor think of a nightmare, It is decorated after my own designs. Whenever 1 found anything too big to crowd into @ drawer or pigeon hole I nailed it on the wall. The door is my photograph album, whereon are tacked the counterfeit presentments of all my friends who have sent in their miniatures. Whatever the other members of the family absolutely refused

to allow in any other room I have nailed up on the walls of my lair. I am no nig- gard with nails. When I nail a smail steel engraving, unframed, to the wall, the easiest way to get that picture down is to pull the wall away from it. The lair looks a housebold scrap book. And I think that is why [ like it.
