Fatal Accident From the Hlectric Light.

[thas been thought that one of the chief advantages of the electric light lies in its comparative safety. It dees not explode like kerosene, nor can it ignite flying cur- tains like gas. Caildren and servants can- not get atthe flame without breaking the globe that holds the vacuum, in which case the fame would go out. All this is com- fortable tu think of, and we suppose it is in substance trustwocthy. Bat there is a bitter drop even in the honey of this cup. A fatal example is immediately at hand in proof. At a theatre in Birwingaan, England, a Mr, Bruno, a musician, has Just been killed on the spet by the machinery of an electric light. The London Sines gives details of the accident, from which it appears that Beuno unfortunately causht hold of two brass connections at sucli @ moment as to receive the full shock of the electric current, generated by a battery used to supply the lamps of the building. Bruno was unable to let go the brass con- nections, and sank down insensible, drag- ging them with him. Medical aid was useless, for, in spite of every restorative, the poor iman died. Of course, with a light battery, no such danger as this would exist, but the accident shows that in many cases such risks from electricity lights would have to be provided fer.—New York Heen- ing Post.

The Proposed Worild’s Fair.

The World’s Fair bill, to be acted upon by Congress, is summarized as feliows: It states that the fair isto be held at New York in 1333, in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the treaty of the peace and of the recognition of American independence; provides fur the appoint- ment of two commissioners from each State,

one from each Territory and one from the}

Fires in Japan.

The Tokio Fire De- partment is a more ridiculous organization than the brain of any burlesque mins trel has yet conceived, and dues absolutely nothiag towards extinguishing a fire, though it sometimes liunts the district in which the fire is to burn by tearing down buildings, and thus robbing it of fuel. Charles Lamb telis about Chinamen, who, for centuries burned down their houses in order to roast their pigs, before some invent- : or of more genius than Edison discovered | that it was not absolutely necessary to burn | a house in order to roast a pig.
