So, then, if you raise the legal rate, even to cix and a balf per cent. it would cause a great deal of trouble, because those poor anfortu- nate wretches—for I cannot call them any- thing else — who have given mortgages on their property would be immediately called upon to pay them up. I would rather leave it open, and let parties make their own ar- rangements, than legalize a higher rate than six per cent.
