The Christmas Ladies’ Home Journal far surpasses in general excellence and attractivenesa any previous.issue. of that magazine. Its delicate-toned cover most artistically symbolizes Christmas, and the sentiment and spirit of the holiday season are reflected in its pages. An appropriate opening is @ characterization of “Scrooge,” from Dickens’ “Christmas Carol,” the first of Charles Dana Gibson’s series of sketches of the great noyelist’s best known charac- ters. Not less interesting, and revealing the humor and pathos of the Chrisimas of

the children of the very poor, is a page ot M. F. Wolfs waifs. In sharp and bright contrast is an

article by Lady Jenne, telling ‘What Christmas Means to Queen Victoria,” and a feature of romantic interest is a delight- fully illustrated article on the Creoles of New Orleans, by Ruth McEnery Stuart. Quite as interesting is “The Garden Puariy of an Empress,” an American woman’s description of a great social function given annually by the Empress of Japan. To the Christmas Jourpal Rosa Bonheur con- tributes “The Story of My Life,” and special drawings and Photographs, telling of her work as an artist, her successes and of her daily life. Mrs. Henry Ward Beecher, in the second of the “Great Per- sonai Events” papers, recalls “When Mr. Beecher Sold Slaves in Plymouth Pulpit,” the excitement incident to those remark- able slave auctio:.s and their wide-reach- ing effect being graphically detailed. The fiction is singlarly inviting: the opening chapters of a serial—“The Burglar Who Moved Paradise,” by Herbert D. Ward —are given. The story is a sequel to Eliza- beth Stuart Pheips’ “An Old Maid’s Para- dise,” and is in the same humorous vein. Another romance—*“ Love’ at Valley Forge,” by Sara King Wiley—is a story of powerful dramatic interest. Edward W. The pract.ce of a woman changing her name on marriage originated from a Roman custom, and came into use after the Roman occupation. Thus, Julia and Octavia, married to Pompey and Cicero, were called by the Romans Julia of Pompey, Octavia of Cicero, and in later times in most European countries signed their names in the same way, but omitted ithe “of.” On the other hand at the be- ginning of the seventeenth century, the usage seemed doubtful, since we find Catherine Parr so signing herself after she had twice married, and we always hear of Lady Jane Grey (not Dudley), Arabella Stuart (not Seymour), etc. Some persons think the custom originated from the scriptural teaching that husband and. wife are one. This was the ruleof law so far back as Bracton, and it was decided in the case of Von vs. Smith, in the reign of Elizabeth, that a woman by marriage loses her former name and legally receives the name of her husband. The custom, however is not universal. In Spain and Portugal married women do not take the names cf their husbands, but continue ‘o be known by their own. In many parts of the United States @ woman never relinquishes her maiden name and is called by it as cften as by that of her husband. Even in the rura! parts of Eng- land one often finds a married woman ca)led by her maiden nawe, and in country districts of Scotland it is sometimes found that both names are used. In many parts of France and Belgium the husband’s and wife’s names ure. used together when either of then) are mentioned. It might be added that there is at this time a tendency in Ameriea for women to add the surname of the husband to that of their own, as Julia Ward Howe.
