COUNCIL MINUTES ‘

Kent Oakes was congratulated as new speaker of the council and the members of the coun— cil were introduced to him.

Order and approval of agenda.

In ensuing discressim, there was a despute as to the val" iditv of a motion made at the last meeting concerning the yearbook editor.

A further motion was made cmcernina the diletion of

a motim made at the Oct. 17, 1982 meeting. After comments from the council members that particular motion was with- drawn.

Motion: MacFadyen/Murphy to bring the moticn to approve the minutes back to the floor.

Motion: MacDougall/Johnston to approve the minutes of the Oct. 17, 1982 meeting of the Student Council.

Business Arisin :

Anne Gillis approached the council on behalf of the bio- logy club in liew of the coat check, as per the trial oper- aticn of the coat check. 'Ihe coat check was run very ef- ficiently and worked well on the secmd floor of the barn.

Motion: Gillis/Hynes that the biology club have rights to the coat check for the re-

mainder of this academic year. For: 17 - Opposed: 1 Abstentions: 0

motion carried .

Student Representatives on Senate Oammittee:

John MacDougall approached the council in regards to choosing student represent— atives to sit on the Senate Carr‘ittee for Long Range Plan- ninr' for the university. The boazv.‘ is to be emposed of five faculty members, three

students, and one alumni. ‘ More than three names will be brought. to the Senate Nomin— ating C'muittee, who will chose the final three student representatives. The Long Range Planning Committee is t place their recommendations ' before Senate on March 25, 1983. Nine nominations had already bee} sulmitted to the Council for positions on the committee. 'Ihey are:

Jim Murtagh — Senior Business Pat Moore - Freshman Arts Andy Palmer — Freshman Business

Mike Ccnnally - Junior Science Mark Murphy - Senior Business David MacDonald - 3rd year Engineering Mike McCarthy — Junior Arts Paul Chandler — Freshman Arts

John Geer offered his assist- ance to the students chosen for the ccmmittee.

Motion: Trainor/Archibald that two students from each faculty be chosen to be pre- sented to nominating commit- tee.

In ensuing discussion, it was pointed out that the senate had decided 01 non- cmstituency representaticn in order that those best qualified could be m the committee, not represaita- tives chosen just because of faculty representation.

Motion: Hynes/Trainor to cease nominations.

There was a review of the nominations, and those present spoke on their own behalf.

It was felt by same, commit- tee members misinterpreted their role in this matter, as it had been established
