Mrs. N. Salmond read a letter re appointing delegates to presbyter- i111 which was left over till next meeting. She also presented the annual report which W55 filled out. A reading on “Christian Stew- ardship" was given by Mrs. A. B. MacLeod and on "Community Friendship” by Mrs. Milford Buch- anan. Mrs. Hector McNevin invit- ed the members to her home for the January meeting. All those who held an office were re-elected for the new year.

A very impressive Canadian Friendship carol service was then carried out with president as lead- er. Seven candles of goodwill and friendship for the different peoples who have come to live in Canada were lighted by Mrs. A. B. Mc- Leod for the Jews of Canada. Mrs. Milford Buchanan, Canadian In- dians. Mrs. Don McPhee for the French Canadians, Mrs. Stephen McLeod, Europeans, Mrs. John Mc- Phoil. Africa and Asia, Mrs. Head, Belgians, Dutch, Czechoslovakians and Mrs. Shaw the candle of love.

The candlelight ceremony was interspersed by readings and the singing of lovely Christmas carols by the members. The president closed the beautiful service with praycr and Our lord's Summary of the Law read responsively fol- lowed by the benediction after which a social hour with refresh- ments were enjoyed by all.

telephone rang. She went into the living room. hoping the bell would stop before she could reach the instrument. hoping it was a wrong number, and only faintly hoping it was Barney demanding further explanations.

She said, "Hello." faintly.

The rich voice of Stefan Zorane said, “Miss Porter. will you please come to my apartment at once on a matter of the mvst urgent 1m- portance?”

She sighed. "I'll come at once," she said wearlly. She waited a moment, then telephoned for n taxicab.

Barney Teel, entering his apart- ment saw the telegram lying on the floor a few inches inside the door. He opened it.

"So sorry to disa/ppolnt Pippy?’

The reponter stared at the mes- sage and the color slowly left his face. He crumpled the sheet of paper into a small ball and hurled it across the room. He was trying to control a temper that had been driven. finally, tog far. He crossed the room almost at a run. snatch- ed up his hat and went out.

He yelled at a, prowling taxicab, jumped 1n. slammed the door and gave the driver sally’: address.

A half block from Sally's apart- ment he saw her cross the side- walk and enter a taxi. "Trail that cab," Barney said,

Stefan Zorane was standing in the middle of the large green room, smoking one of his strange. twisted cigars, when sally arriv- ed. He was just a little tipsy, and he was in full possession of his faculties.

He said in his firle melodious voice. "I em delighted to see you again. Seeing a girl like you only once in two days is not enough, Miss Porter."

"Why." sally said sharply, "did you telephone me?"

"I'm getting to that. “I've been thinking about you continuously, since I saw you yesterday, and‘ because of your beauty and your charm I've decided to give you the most wonderful chance you ever had."

He had maneuvered her between two chairs. Without making an is- sue of it she could not get out without moving one qt the chairs and sliding along the wall behind it. She didn't want to make an issue of it. She said steadily, "What are you talking about, MimZor- one?"

“I'm getting to that, too. my beautiful sally. Since you came in her yesterday with the rain spark- ling in your lashes I haven't been able to get you out of my head. You're such g lovely thing."

He lurched between the chairs Before she could push either chair away he had her by the shoulders He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. Sally pushed against him, escaped his arms and slipped out behind the chair nearest the door.

The doorbell rang. She ran to the door and opened it. with Ste- fan Zroane just behind her saying angrily. "Don't open thut KlOOTl" Barney Tool, white-faced. with eyes so block 11nd so staring that
