Why Young Men Should Join I. O. O. F's.

The approaching anniversary of| American Odd Fellowship promises to be even more interesting this vear than heretofore. The various lodges are planning entertain ments, and there is no doubt that the 26th day of April will | be more memorable than ever in the history of the order. No other organi- zation in this country has greater cause for congratulation. In Massa- | chussetts alone the membership has | gone ahead of any other order and is still increasing.

Oriental Lodge, No. 10, will cele-| brate the sixty-seventh anniversary of | the order on Saturday afternoon, April | 24, in the Grand Lodge Hall, by a) children’s entertainment and dance; | and on Monday evening, April 26,there | wi'l be a dance, concert, ete, in the} same hail.

There are a great many very solid reasons why young men should become | Odd Fellows, but pone more emphatic | than the one mentioned in the follow- | ing extract from the Manchester Unicn : “Odd Fellowship regards temperance asone of the cardinal virtues. And while it doez not identify itself with any of the numerous organizations de- signed to promote temperance through special modes and for special ends, yet | all its teachings enjoin sobriety and in- | caleate abstemious habits. Tolerant | toward erring brothers, and ever ready | to persuade by kind words and friendly | acts those of their number proneto in- dulgence in intoxicating beverages, yet, when these fail to correcta brother i his wayward conrse, they do not hesi- tate to inaugurate adiscipline that will | briag suspension from our privileges or expulsion from the ranks.

The activity among the Patriarchs Militant still continues. This branch of the order expects to have several | thousand mea in line at the celebration in September.

The committees on the celebration in September, on the occasion of the visit of the Sovereign Grand Lodge to Bos- ton, are already hard at work making} the necessary preliminary arrange- | ments.

A lodge in Danver, Col., has paid over $6,500 to one of its members, who | is still oa the sick list. And they have a right to feel proud of such. action, while at the sametime lt is nothing more than the member’s due. This only illustrates how the order keeps its pledges. —Boston Globe 21th.

Gold Decaying.

The statement recently made at a meeting of the managers of the Bank of England, that the stock of gold in Great Britain is £10,000,000 less than it was five years ago, is attracting a great deal of attention. It indicates a currency constriction severe. enough to.account for the silver agitation which is now going on in England. There is a like scarcity of gold in Germany and France. -A writer inthe Edinburgh Review has estimated that in the nive years previous to 1883 there was, com- paring the demand with the supply, an actual deficit of gold amountiug to $247,000,000 sterling, an amount equal to a dozen years’ yield of all the gold mines in the world. He also declares that the pro- duct of the gold and silver mines of the world is now faliing short about $115, 000,000 annually of the amount which the experts declare necessary for the ordinary uses of society. This being the case there is good ground for the assertion of the late conference of French bankers that “the monetary question is everywhere the question of the day.”’
