appeared on P.E.I. but I cannot recaii when it was not present at Vernon River. There are many other sites where the biue Tupin is common but in more recent years coioured forms began to appear. These are beTieved to be Russei Tupins. They appear in a great variety of coiours and, whiTe in bioom, are most attractive. When the bioom fades and is repiaced by seed pods, the piant is much Tess attractive.

Let us finish this articie with purpie Toosestrife (Lythrum saiicaria). This piant is very common in damp to wet ditches and is quite an attractive Tate summer roadside piant. It is easiTy recognized by the Tong spikes of purpiish blooms.

OnTy the fringes of roadside piants have been touched at this time. Perhaps it woqu be a good idea to have a yearTy articTe on this subject. In the meantime, I hope this has been of interest to some readers.

PIPING PLOVER SURVEYORS NEEDED by Dan McAskiTT

The Internationai Census for the Piping PTover wiTT be in fuTT swing the week of June lst to 8th, 1991. The Society requires the assistance of a Targe number of voiunteers for two aspects of this survey. The first aspect is the presurvey period (between now and June lst) when an attempt wiTi be made to identify as many of the breeding beaches as possibTe. A person hired on an Environment Week project wiTT assembie information from a11 the existing surveys to date but we need the assistance of as many individuais as possibTe to report aTT recent Piping Piover sightings to the Society so that none of the recent breeding sites are missed.

The second phase of the project wiTT be a coordinated survey of aTT known breeding beaches and as many other potentiai breeding sites on P.E.I. as possibTe. Since beach size varies, anyone who can offer a half day or more of time for surveying in the June lst to June 8th period can be of reai assistance to this internationai effort for the recovery of the Piping Piover.

As it is very important that the surveys be carried out in a consistent manner, a workshop on the survey techniques has been set up for May 15th at the CoTes Buiiding auditorium on Richmond Street (next to the Legisiative Assembiy). The survey and record card system is simpie but the consistency of survey techniques wiTT make the interpretation of the data much easier for Our compiier. Hence the need for the workshop. Where possible, the beaches wiiT be surveyed by two person teams under temperature conditions (neither too hot nor too con) that ensure as much as possibie that the survey wiii cause minimaT disturbance to nesting Piping PTovers. The workshop wiTT provide a11 the information you wiTT need to heTp us out and wiii estabTish a standby pTan if the weather is so bad during this week that we have to use the second week of June.
