Smithsonian To Get Famous Hepe Diamond

WASHINGTON (AP) — \The fabulous Hope diamond, a. stone of beauty and ill fortune, is about to pass from a- New York gem merchant to the States.

The deep blue diamond, it was learned Friday, will be given the Smithsonian Institution by gem dealer Harry Winston, to be dis- played in the Smithsonian’s hall of gems and minerals here. It is the largest known blue diamond in the world, and the most storied.

There was no announcement of the gift from either Winston or the Smithsonian, but it is under- stood the tragedy - haunted dia- mond will arrive in Washington Monday.
