A Mr. Gravel, of Etchemin, has, according to the ‘Chronicle,’ shipped some 500 of these houses to Panama, where thy are to be erected and used by the contractors fur the canal.

Tue City Council meets this evening at 7.30 te examine the books of the late Col- lector Mr. Shepherd, for the years 1878-79. It is said the arrears of taxes for those years amounc te over $7,000. Most of this is due by parties well able to pay. It therefore seems strange to us that the Council, while publishing the names of parties in arrears for 1880, should let those in arrears for 1878-9 escape without one way er another insisting

on payment. 4h.

A New Inga.—A Prince Edward Jsland cor- respondent of the St. John ‘‘ News” writes that the idea is being discussed among several wealthy farmers to send Rev. 8 R. Ackman, of Cornwall, te England, to seeure about two hundred west of England farm boys to work on the Island where laboring help is scarce. Mr. Ackman is to do the talking in regard te assuring the boys that they will have geod treatment. Mr. Ackman was in England seven years ago and, as a minister of the Gos. pel, his words woul’, without doubt, have the required weight. Mr. Ackman’s mother is at present dangerously ill, and as he de sires on this account very much io visit England, the project will, deubtless, te ar- racged.

From experiments made for this purpose, the following results have been obtained. They were made by burning samples ot Devoe’s Brilliant Oil and ordinary Oils, and testing their illuminating power, It was found that Coal Gas costing one cent at $3 per thousand feet, gave a light equal to 18 candles, while Devoe’s Brilliant Oil consuming 27.4 grammes Cost ing half a cent, gave a light +qaal to 9 candles, “A good Argand or Johusou’s Burver, the Burner's used in the last experiment, will therefore give the light of 2 ordinary Oil Burners in direct comparison, at no greater expense in the cas of the finer and safer grades of Oil.
