I: stated | that the Society had 30 missionaries to the Indi.us, 4 to the Japanese, 3 tothe Ger- mans, 9 to the French, 25 to the Half- breeds, &e., in British Columbia, and 423 missionaries in the domestic work. Last year the income had been $141,475, and the expenditure $150,150. Prince Edward Island District had raised $2,504. :

Rev. Stephen T. Teed had for his topic : Proyidential openings call for stimulated veal and increased liberality. These open- ings were bey! Mey Ali lands are call. ing for the Gospel. He vigorously com: | batted the idea that the world was getting | worse. The history of the missions of our own Church showed that Christianity was not played eut. He paid a glowing eulogy to Canada. Truly patriotic sentiments were earnestly expressed and found a hearty reception in the audience.

Rev. (% M. Campbell spoke on the spiritual wants of our country and eur res- ponsibilities in view thereof. Equally pa- trietic with the former speaker, he dw elt upon the greatness of ‘‘our country.” “He claimed that we should follow the settlers into new countries. This is what has given Methedism its prominent position in the States.

Rev. J. Shaw said that newspapers tried to show a prosperity of the country de- pended upen politics and peliticians. He said that this country owed a great deal to her pioneer preachers. Missions: are es- sential to the life of a church. Atl kinds of churches have them. The success of missions cannot be tabulated. Its unknown success is greater

to stage be tabulated? Can the number ef homes that have been saved from beggary and vice be numbered! It is our duty to sustain this cause. If we love our souls ; if we love Christ, it is our duty to send the Gospel. Many people are discouraged at the greatness of the effort. But if God is on our side, have we reason for discourage- ment ! Then we have the power of prayer. Greece once boasted of 30,000 gods. ‘The apostles prayed, and these disappeared. The work may seem great, but it is not im- possible. Let us say, then, in the lan- guage of faith, ‘‘it can be done.” The toilers may fail, but the work will go on. *Earnestly he urged the people to liberality. More jewelry was worn by the Methodist ple than would pay off the debt of the issionary Society. It was a good, prac- tical speech.

Rev De. Scriexcanp tried to remember what he said when le was here five years ago, but could not and he comforted him- self with the thought that their memories were as short as itis. Grand results often came from small beginnings. Paul, Luke and Timothy formed the first missionary dep- utation to Europe. Half a century age our own church had only two missionaries and an income between $500 and $400. [fn elo- quent terms he dwelt upon the great open- ings on this Continent. .Canada hasa larger territory than the United States. The grand probabilities of the Province of Man- itoba were dwelt upon. Of the 60,000 Indians of Dominion only about half ‘had been reached by Christian agency. He claimed that we had got possession of the North-West Territory through the agency of the missionaries. Every Indian shot by the American Governmen cost $100,009! Our missionaries had dealt honorably with the Indians on behalf of the Government and

the result was that we possessed that country withont spending a cent of

money or shedding a drop ef blood. We have more faith in the Bible than in bullets and in the gospel than in gunpowder. Several illustrations were given of the re

markable success of the work among the In- diaus particularly at Fort Simpson. ‘‘To give life and save life’ he cliimed was the object of the Missionary Society. The Dr. was in his happiest meood and delivered a speech which will cause him long to be re- meinbered. He possesses all the elements of a good speaker. There was a fairly good congregation. Suitable selections of music were furnished by the choir at intervals, adding to the enjoyment of all. A «ollec- tion on behalf of the society was taken.
