FIRE ISVESTIGATION,

Aw inveatigation into the origin of the fire in Mr. Peter Doyle’s store on the morning of the 27th January, was held in the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Courtroom yesterday afternoon before Chief Engineer Large and assistant Engineers Beer and Hermans, and Councillor Crabbe repr enting the Fire Committee of the City Council. Mr. M. Trainor, with whom Mr. Doyle was in=ured, was also present.

Mr Doyle testified that he tire; he generally kept open until nearly ten o'clock. store but himself

He remembered gas in the back shop with a match about half-past seven; turned the gas out before he left. He was in bed when the sounded; Mr. Trainor notified him of the fire. He had $900 insurance on his stock; supposed his stock was worth $1,500 or $1,600 at the time of the fire.

Joseph McAlduff, a young lad in the employ of Mr. Doy le, said le lett the store before seven o'clock, and was not in the back shop after six o'clock. He had no idea how the fire started.

Alexander Gillis and Policeman [Prad- ley gave evidence concerning the d covery of the fire, but nothing new was brought cut.
