= British Shipbuilding in 1885. The past year proved very unfavor- able to the ship-building trade of the United Kingdom, and a large decrease from last year’s production is report- ed. The total numberof vessels built in 1885, according ww the Glasgow Herald, was 614, with a total tonnage of 540,282. Asa proof of the great depression which has exhisted in the trade this year, it is stated that the falling off since last year has been 710,- 000 tons, while the decrease, compared with 1883, has been 710,000 tons. The relative position of the British ports in this industry is shown by the tollowing table giving last year’s pro-

Maps of the several localities, together with plans and descriptive specifications, can be'seen at this office on and after MONDAY. the llth day of JANUARY next (1885), where printed forms of tender can be obtained. Aciike ciass of information relative to the works north of Allan burg will be furnished at the Resident Engineer's Oftice, Thorold; and for works south of Allan- burg, plans, specifications, Kc, may be seen at his Resident Engineer’s Office, Welland.
Contractors are requested to bear in mind that tenders will not be eonsidered unless made strictly in accordance with the printed forms, and, in the case of firms, except there are attached the avtual signatures, the nature of the occupation and place of residence of each mem- ber of the same; and further, an aecepted bank cheque for the sum of 7'wo Thousand Dollars or more—according to the extent of the work on the section—must accompany the respective tenders, which sum shall be forfeited if the party tendering de clines entering into contract for the works, at the rates stated in the offer submitted,
The amount required in each case will be stated on the form of tender.
Tie cheque or money thus sent in will be returned to the respective parties whose tenders are not accepted.
