Premier Mercier was waitel on by a large number of friends here yesterday and asked to explain himself about the Bay Chaleur scandal. He said he was away when the affair took place, and would not say anything until he had consulted his colleagues. He was sorry Pacaud had gone away. He had advised him to make a clean breast of the whole affair, and was muchsurprised when he had learned Pacaud had left for Europe.

Hawtrax, Aug. 28. — Quebec — Good catches of cod are being made at Long Point, Thunder River and St. Juhn’s River and fair at Sheldrake, Magpie and Grand River, while only a few are being taken at Newport Point. Launce are very plentiful at Long Point and Sheldrake and good at Thunder River. Squid are fairly plentiful at Grand River and Newport Point.

New Brunswick—The fishing throughout

this district is very dull, except at Point Kscuminac, where mackerel are reported very plentiful. _ P. E. 1.—Fair catches of mackerel are be- ing made at Miminigash, and fair fishing Big Miminigash. Good catches of mackerel and fair hauls of cod and haddock at Malpeque.

Cape Breton—Al! branches of the fish- ing industry are very dull, the only catches reported to-night being a few mackerel anc cod. Squid at St. Anns, and one quintal of cod per boat at Louisbury.

Nova Scotia—Shore fishing govd, but mackerel and herriug scarce at Lunenburg. Dogfish destroying the fishermens nets and pieventing codfishing at Liverpool, are the only reports received, Bait, herring bait by tishermens nets reported at Liverpoo). Fair quantities of squid taken at Grand River and Newport Point, Que., and some small ones gigged to-day at Louisburg.
