Lonpox, March 13.—A despatch to the Daily Chronicle,from Bloemfontein, dated Tuesday evening, March 13, says: ‘Bloemfontein surrendered to-day. It was Occupied at noon. President Steyn, with a majority of fighting burghers bas fled northward.

Genera! French was within five miles of the place at 4 o’clock on Monday after noon. He sent a summons into the town threatening to bombard it unless it sar- rendered by 4 a.m.,0n Tuesday.

A white flag was hoisted on Tuesday morning and a deputation of the Town Council with Mayor Killver came out to meet Lord Roberts at Spitskcp, five miles eouth of the town, making a formal eur render of the place.

Lord Roberts made a state noon. He received a tremendous ovation.

OPINION IN LONDON.

Lonpoy, March 15.—The general Cpin-~ ion, this morning, in the Continenta! as well as inthe London press, is that the Free Staters have practically thrown up the sponge.

It is thought likely that a rear-guard action will be fought to Koonstadt by tbe irreconcibles of t:e Free State and Trans- vaalere, that revirement will be made from the Free State and Natal upon the Vaal where there is sure to be serious fighting.

Lord Roberts ‘s not likely to lose much time in providing @ p:ovisional Govern ment to administer the affairs of the Free State.

General White is considered the best man to take hold of affairs.

The commander-in-chief can now turp his attention to the Southern district of the Free State, where Generals Clemente, Gatacre and Brabant have been holding the south bank of the Orange River, awaiting orders to push back the Boers.

The latter are now in a bad position between them and Lord Roberts’ army.

No movement of any importance was mace in that section yesterday, But a concerted advance will probably be made immediately,

Dear Sie.—I think it was a shamefa act for Sir Lonis Davies to dismiss Mr. R K Brace from the office of Gas In-p-ctor. The excuse he writes t> some vf the petitioners appears o be very flimey. But if it was dove toenable bim to fill bie place by another man. I will guarantee that he will know something about it at the next election. I think, myself, that he was diamissed because he was an ac- tive member of a certain Loyal Society, with which Laurier, Tarte, Bourassa & Co., are not in jove. It can plainly be seen that a pro-Boer would suit them much better than a loyal British eub- ject who would not withhold bis only son, but sent him to South Africa to fight the battles of the Queen, as RK Brace did. And I have no hesitation in saying that the man is hard-hearted and unsympathetic indeed who, claiming to bea loyal Britiso subject, would not take the first opportunity of turning out of power the pacty who dismissed Mr. Brace
