Update on Canadian Nature_Federation Activities

At the CNF executive committee meeting in February a heavy agenda was handled.v I will discuss a few of the issues which would be of interest to you.

CNF Membership renewals are higher than in previous years and we are hopeful of an increase in our total numbers, perhaps to 20,000. Head office and the book store have been moved to Suite 203 75 Albert St. in Ottawa (KlP 6G1). The new location has more space and should result in better membership service and higher bookstore sales.

It was decided to establish a CNF conservation award which is to be named in honour of Douglas Pimlott, a past CNF president who has an impressive record in conservation activities throughout Canada.

A number of issues were discussed which involve Eastern Canada including poaching of seabirds in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The next issue of Nature Canada will publish a letter written by David Cairns from Charlottetown to draw attention to the situation. Rick Pratt, environmental specialist, has been active in assisting maritime groups who are working against broadcast aerial spraying for spruce budworm. Also, he delivered a brief for CNF in support of the stand taken by the Natural Areas Advisory Committee on the Deroche Issue at a Land Use Commission hearing in Tracadie Hall. The Federation has allocated some financial support for the NAAC in its effort to preserve Deroche.

The nominating committee (chaired by Diane) tabled a progress report and has since finalized a slate of twelve candidates for national directors. The slate, which includes Hal Mills of Mount Stewart, will be mailed to CNF members by April lst with a call for further nominations. The brochure announcing the 1978 CNF conference to be held in Charlottetown in August will be in the same mailing.

I sent a copy of the program for the CNF conference in Charlottetown to all directors. The CNF executive expressed its delight with the state of preparedness of our Prince Edward Island Conference Planning Committee.
