The almost, although not quite, unprecedented occasion of the re- cc ion of three English, (not to mention Colonial) mails in one day,happened early on Wednesday morning last, namely, the long looked-for January, the February and the March—the latter bring- ing London dates to the 5th and Falmoutli to the 7th ult. Such an event, we mav venture to predict, will never occur again. The in- troductitfn ofStenm-power into our packet system will-cure all that. The leading events of political im ortance are the Queen's mar- fia e, (the intelligence of which auspicious event wa yesterda offi- cia ly communicated to both Houses ofthe Legislature,) and t e al- =moet certainty ofa war with China. Her Majesty’s Ship flndroma-g eke, lately on this station, has been ordered to the scene of action in the Chinese seas. .

Parliament was opened by Her Majesty in person on the 16th of January. The Royal speech on the occasion will be found reported in another column. ’

stated, that since the Annual Meeting of this Society, m menis- had been made by the Committee to hold meetings once an every alternate month—that the had presented a Petition to the House ofAssembly, praying for tlyie utter suppression ofthe ffitrac in ardent s irits—tliat the said petition had been favourably entertained by t at Honourable House, and that a Committee have been appointed to consider its merits and report thereupon at the next'session of the Legislature, by bill or otherwise. He set forth the necessity of ..some renewed effort, for the purpose of replenishing the funds of - the Society, particularly with reference to the circuliition'of Tam,- erance Tracts and Periodicals, and concluded by introducing Mr. illiams and Mr. Connell, as having been appointed by the Com- mittee to address the meeting.

Mr. Williams then delivered an eloquent and impressive Address, and was seconded by a plain a'nd practical narrative of facts from Mr. Connell, which told powerfully upon the hearts and sympa- thies. of a crowded audience. Several members addressed the meeting, and expressed their gratification at ‘the renewed impetus which seemed to be given to the Society's operations.

The following Resolutions-were severally moved, and unani- mously passed :— ‘ I r

' 1. That the several Ministers of the Gospel who may have complied with the request of this Society, simultaneonsl to deliver avdiscou'rse on the subject ofTemperanco, be respectful y solicited to report the same to the Secretaries ofthis Society; and that they be desired to consider the publishing of this Resolution as convey- ing to them the said solicitation.

2. That this Societ most heartily concur in the measure adopted by the Committee relative to petitioning the Legislature for the suppression oftlie trafic in ardent spirits in the Colony; a (I request them to continue their exertions, in any way they may deem most expedient for carrying out those measures so indispensible to the well being ofsociety. ».

3. It is pleasing to state that Mr. George Coles has suc- ceeded in putting his‘ Steam Grist Mill into successfiijoperation. We visited the establishment a few days since, and werl'imuch gra- tified with the apparent convenience of his very extensive Mills. Brewer , Distillery, Malt House and Kiln, the whole covering one third 0 an acre of ground. The Machines of the Mill have been erected in a workmonlike manner, and promise to do a great deal of business, and we hope that so enterprising and industrious a person will meet with a'reinuneratingretnrn for his very extensive outlays.
