pollutes the water ot Spring Park Brook and renders it unfit for use. Horses, it is said, won't driuk it, for cattle it is injurious, and the women can’t use it to wash with.

The nuisance has this extent—no more.

Now, besides the Charlottetown Woollen Factory, Spring Park Brook drains the whole of the northern section of the town extending from the residence of William Heard, Esq., on the northeast, to the residence of William Welsh. Esq., on the southwest—Gregortown, and the upper extensior of Prince street, Palmer's Lane and the upper end of Great George street, Bayfield street, and all the other streets from Euston street north which run from Great George street to Lower Spring Park rood. The drainage of all this part of the town goes into Spring Park Brook. Yet it is charged that, simply because of the wash of the factory aud of a skin store near it, the water is unfit for use. Why, if the factory were never started or if it were closed down to-morrow, no horse could be forced to drink of the brook, and any cow which would show such bad taste as to do so should be butchered off-hand. Granted that the “wash” of the factory makes the water unfit for washing purposes, the day has certainly gone by when any woman would think of lighting a fire beside the brook as of yore, and washing her dirty linen, etc., there.

It should be remembered—it should never be forgotten—that the prosperity of Charlottetown—as of every town— depends upon the labor which is done in it; and should the town, by its action for a nuisance, hamper or close the Woollen Factory, it will shackle or destroy a valuable contributory to its prosperity. The factory distributes, every week, about a thousand dollars in wages and expenses, which would go out of circulation ; employs a large number of men, women and boys, who would be compelled to go elsewhere; has a large amount of capital, which would be lost or taken

The Duke of Saxe-Coburg not deeming the antecedents of the two ladies in question suilicient grounds for excluding them de- murred, but was met with a firm insistance on the part of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. The Duke of Saxe Cobourg thereupon gave orders prohibiting the at- tendance of any of the court officials. Upon hearing of this decision of their host the Duke and Duchess abruptly left the castle. Asthe Dyke of Edinburg is the heiz of the Duke Saxe-Cobourg, the episode may lead to some amusing complications. Foreign News Notes.

Lieut. Viand, author of the report in the Figaro that the French sailors massacred the natives at Hue after they ceased resist- ance, has been removed from active service.

A Berlin despatch states that two Jews have been convicted at Costin of setting fire to the synagogue to obtain the insur- ance. They were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. Others implicated in the crime were sentenced to shorter terms. The crime was originally attributed to the Christians.

A Paris despatch says that a yellow book, issued recently, detailing the negotiations between. France and China regarding Ton- quin, seys:—‘‘China demands the whole of northern Annam, and the French evacua- tion thereof, allowing France only the southern province. There is no doubt the arrival ef the reinforcement expedition will promptly terminate the work so gal- lantly begun in Tonquin. France is still ready to negotiate with China in a friendly spirit, and hopes that accomplished facts may induce her to take a more just view of

A Horrible Suicide.

A horrible suicide occurred here yester- day. Sameul Biehl, aged 24, employed in the glass works, plunged head foremost into a furnace of white hot coals.

Granted that the Woollen Factory Company contribute most largely to the pollution of the stream, it cannot be denied that hundreds of citizens do so in a smaller measure; and are the Company to bear all the expense of a sewer? Is it not quite evident that, taking everything into consideration, the Company should not be compelled by the City to make the sewer? Is it not quite evident that the City Council should have the sewer made at the ex- pense of the whole civic commanity ?
