Hommage a Jeanne d'A rc.

LE MONUMENT DE YAUCONLEURS.

Le 24 septembre dernier a eu lieu l1 pose de la première pierre du mo- nument élévé à Naucouleurs (France), en l’honneur de'Jeanne d’A’c. Cette fête à é:é splendide et le récite inté- ressera, nous n'en doutons pas, nos lecteurs.

“La ville de Vaucouleurs était co- quettement décorés. On avait dressé de nombreux arcs de triomphe dont le principal représentait l'ancienne porte du chateau. L:s rues 6-aient dé corées de nombreux drapeaux et ban- nières.

L'animatin, très grande. était en- core augmenté: par la pré-encz de deux régiments d'infanterie, l* 164e et 1: 192e, cantonnés là pour les ma- nœuvres.

Mgr Pagis a célébré un service te- ligieux, au cours duquel l'abbé Le Nordez a fait un très remarquable éloge de Jeanne d'Arc.

Après la reception des fonctionnai- res à la mairie l'inauguration a eu lieu.

Une estrade était dressé: au-des sus de la crypte ; à cûié de cette es- trade réservée au ministre et aux in- vités un escalier conduisait à une au- tre estrade ou ont pris pince l'évêque, Mgr Pagis, et le clergé.

Au début de son discours, l'évêque a dit qu'il est heureux de voir réaliser le beau rêve de son patriotismeget de sa foi

Il a félicité le ministre qui repré- sente le gouvernement que la France s‘est donné et qu'elle gardera avec l'adhésion sincère etlunanime d: tous ses enfants ; il a félicité le Pape dont le cœur bat à l'uision de celui de la France.

Rappelant le grand mouvement d'opinion en faveur de Jeanne d'Arc: il a raconté la campagne entreprise depuis trois aus et a ajouté :

“Je suis l éveque de la frontière et quaad j'entends le canon ou le clai- ron, je songe à jeanne qui incarne la grandeur de la patrie“.

Le discours de Mgr Pagis a été ac- cueilli par de nombreux applaudisse- ments.

Le ministre a répondu qu'il est heu- reux de représent:r le gouvernement de la République à cette fête, car il a sigaé dernièsement, comme ministre des beaux arts, un arré 6 classant ce qui reste de la crype parmi les monu- ments historiques. .Il a félicité l'évé- que de Verdun de son initiative patri- otique et fait ensuite l'histoire des ex- ploits de la bonne Lorraine.

Le vrai roi était là ou était la France; C'est Jeanne qui fut la vreie créatrice de la patrie française.

Le curé de Commercy a donné lec- tare du procés-verbal relatif à la pre- mire pierre qui a été posée solenelle- ment. Le cortège a visité ensuite la crypte de la chapelle historique.

Pierre résista encore quel- ques instants, puis il céda; il but un verre et puis un autre. La première bouteille était vide, jamais Pierre n‘en avait bu autant; aussi, sa tête commencça-t-elle à tourner; le sang lui monta aux tempes; il se mit à jaser, à rire, à crier comme Yvon dont la tête était plus solide, mais qui, grace à des libations antérieures, était au même niveau que lui.

Que faisait la marmite pen- dant ce temps-la? Depuis la chute de son couvercle, Pierre ne l’avait pas regardée à ce moment, il tourna machinalement les yeux vers elle, et il fallait que l'ivresse eut bien abruti son intelli-
