NEWS FROM THE WEST.—SUCCESS OF THE LIBERAL CAUSE.

We have just now received the report of an import- ant Public Meeting which took place at Malpeque, yes- terday. It was attended by about four hundred people, and was addressed by the Hon. Mr. Coles, Messrs. Rae, PD. Maclean, Clarke,and Montgomery. Strong Resolu- tions were triumphantly carried—condemning the Pe- tition of the Black Watch men, and their Delegation, and expressing confidence in the present Lieutenant Governor. We shall give the Resolutions in our next.

Coroner’s Inquest.—An Inquest was held on the body of Mary O’Brien, of Fermoy, on the first inst., be- fore John Wright, Esq. Coroner for Prince County. After examining several witnesses, the Jury returned a verdict, “died a natural death,” but the Jurors on their oath, do say, that Patrick O’Brien, the husband of the exid Mary O’Brien, willfully neglected the said Mary

Henry Vere Huntley in the Government of the Colony, I desire to take advantage of the most convenient opportunity of putting you in pos- session of all the facts connected with that agi- tation.

To enable me to do this, in a manner satis- factory to you and to myself, I request that you, one and all, will meet me, publicly, at the Head of St. Peter’s Bay, at the House of Mr. Sutherland, on Monday next, the 23d instant, at 12 o’clock, noon.

You are no doubt aware, that a Petition has been, and is still, in progress of receiving sig- natures, praying Her Majesty the Queen to continue His Excellency in the Government of the Country: You are—many of you at least —equally well aware, that a Petition having an opposite tendency, has been sent through the Country by the friends of the Official or Family Compact Party,—and that the Hon. Edward Palmer and Joseph Pope, Esq—two Officers of the Government and members of the Assembly—are now on their way to Eng- land, as Delegates, with the latter Petition: This Petition I do most unhesitatingly and un- equivocally condemn, for it is based upon False- hood and [njustice. It prays that the Gover- nor may not be continued, under the most ab- surd and ridiculous pretexts—but really and truly because His Excellency encourages the exercise of popular opinions among the great

{majority of the People—because he is favorable

to the introduction of the Responsible System of Government—and because I believe he is anxious to break down the evil ascendancy so long exercised over the best interests of the Country by the Official Party.

Were it possible that Messrs. Pope and Pal- mer’s Mission to England should be followed by that success which its promoters so confi- dently anticipate, there would then be much reason to apprehend an increase to that perni- cious influence in the Administration of the Government, so long and so grievously felt by the People of this Colony. The influence I mean is that of a late dominant Oligarchy, unexampled, in any other Province, for its sel- fishness and rapacity. Its power has been ex- ercised invariably to your prejudice, and to that of the country generally. Two questions that affect you most vitally have been steadily opposed by it: You will clearly perceive that I allude to the Land Tenure and to Responsible Government. In reference to the first, you do not require to be told, that the Official Clique have always aided the absentee Pro- prietors, in their attempts to oppress and im- poverish the Tenantry, and to prevent some equitable settlement of the question that has been raised between Landlord and Tenant— leading, on the one side, to arbitrary exaction and heartless cruelty—on the other, to vision- ary schemes, anxiety, vexation, and sometimes, recklessness. The latter measure was vi0- lently opposed in the last Session, by the very parties who have been delegated to England. And it is a well known fact, that nearly all those who have made themselves conspicuous in getting up the Delegate’s Petition are ad- verse to the principles of Responsibie Govern- ment,
