The Sievinan Bank at Summerside.

Tus institution was established a year Already two hundred and thirty-six

ago. accounts have been opeued, while $06, 034.32 have been deposited, and $10,

090.00 withdrawn. So that the balance on hand at the end of the fiscal year (June 30) was $45,944.33.

The amounts of the deposits range from $1 to $3,000; and the depositors include persons trom all classes in the community—shop andjoflice boys, dealers. and farmers. Several farmers have each deposited as much money as the bank will take from any one customer.

No doubt, the deposits will continue to increase as the people continue to pros per; and it is very well that the people have at hand a means of cultivating habits of saving. The judicious invest ment of money in improved stock, etc.., is of course better than putting it in a Bank. But next to that, for farmers who are not well up to the tricks of trade, the Savings Bank offers the best, because the safest way of investment. We hope to see a Savings Bavk at} Souris and Alberton next year.

Camp Hunter.

THe news from the front, detailed by Tae Examiner's correspondent, is satis- factory. It appears that the field, though commanding and picturesque, is not very well suited for drilling purposes. But then soldiers must not expect to find things easy; and it is well that our militia should be accustomed to perform their evolutions on the rough as well as on the smooth—on the slope of a hill as well as on the level plateau. Climbing the hillsides will try the muscle of our sturdy infantry, and “rushing down the steep decline” will test the horseman- ship of their chief officers, though it would be too bad to see any one of them, merely for the sake of drill, ducked in the placid millpond of the valley.

The men will continue in camp for twelve days; and though many of them are now but raw recruits, we venture the prediction that they will give a good ac- count of themselves at the sham fight, which will take place just before the camp is broken up. The change, exer cise, recreation and discipline in the open country air cannot fail to greatly benefit all at the camp—especially those who reside in the city.

—A despatch from London says that Henry George, author of ‘ Progress and Poverty,” has an article in the July number of the Nineteenth Century, which lauds up American institutions. Mr. George contends that the politicai corruption of the United States does not

spring from the excess, but from the deficiency of democracy. He makes a

very violent attack upon the Duke of Argyle, and all holders of landed estate in Scotland, whom he advises to emi- grate that their lands may be occupied by ditchers and delvers. He has a good deal to say about women chained to fac tory labor, and children who have to work instead of pick berries and wild flowers in heather dells, and of young girls who have to go prowling the streets | and so forth,

By reference to another column it will be noticed that an inteesting event took place yesterday at Mount Stewart. We refer to the marriage of Mr. Daniel Davies, junior, (son of Hon. Benj. Davies) and Miss Anuie Amelia Lochhead. At twelve o’clock a large number of guests left Charlottetown by speeial train to attend the marriage, and having arrived at Mount Stewart proceeded to the Presbyterian Church where they were joined by numerous other guests from Mount Stewart and surroundings. " Suicide by , Hanging.

James St. C. Moore, Esq., Coroner for Queen’s Co, , yeste rday held an inquest in view of the body of Mrs. Catherine Stewart, wife of Mr. Donald Stewart, Belle Creek. From the evidence taken at the inquest we learn that Mrs. Stewart committed the rash act while laboring under a fit of temporary insanity, She had been of unsound mind for sowe time, and her increasing lunacy

was particularly noticeable during the past

three weeks. Yesterday morning her hus- band went fishing, by her request. In his absence she sent her children away from home and then went to the barn, where she fastened a rop2 around a beam, adjust- ed a noose around her vered her face, and slipped from the barn loft into eternity. Between ten and eleven o'clock in the ferenoon, one of her children—a little returned to her home. She missed ‘cr mother and at once went in search of her. Not finding her, she in formed the neighbors, who, on searching the barn, found the unfortunate woman | banging to the beam, cold and dead. The | jury returned the following verdict :—

“That the deceased Mrs. Stewart csme to her death by going up on the barn loft and securing the rope that caused her death on the beam, and on her neck agd then lowered herself dowa through the foft iv antther par? of the barn.”
