Witt Know Berrex Next Tre —Far- met Moore, of Harvey, N. B, had an ex- perience a few nighta ago that he will not be apt to forget in some time, During the evening he met some friends, with whom he had several drinks and became quite exhilirated. Afterwards he was jomed by two suldiers, who supplied him with a bottle and induced him to take a walk up Maryland road. Under the influence of the aforesaid bottle, the jubilant farmer soon forgot himself in a heavy slumber by the way-side, from which he did not awake till early the next morning He then dis- covered that two gold watches and other valuables which he remembered having were missing. He at once put the case in the hands of a detective, who, in a few hours, traced the watches to the soldiers and caused their arrest. The farmer was so well pleased to recover his property that he declined to prosecute, and the prisoners were released.

Large Increase of Commerce.

Che trade returns for the fiscal year just ended are not yet completed, but the proxi mate returne show the following satis- factory results as compared with the returns of previous years: Imports have increased 3,000,000, or two and three quarter per cent.; exports have increased over $15,000,000, or sixteen per cent.; the aggregate trade of the country has increased $18,000,000.

In 1891, the imports exceeded exports by 24 per cent.; this year the balance of trade is the other way by $3,000,000.

The duty coilected shows a decreas: of nearly $3,000,000 or 13 per cent. The rate of duty the previous year was 294 per cent. ; last year it was only 17 1-3 per cent.

In the Alexandra competition four of the Canadian team have won places in the second stage of the CQueen’s prize. Lieut. Revell, of the 22ad Battalion, came in fifth in the competition for the Prince of Wales’ priz>, and Lieut. McAdam, of the 3:4 Battalion, seventh.

Tur Hague, July 23. Telegrams from Batavia confirm the recent accounts of the awful destitution caused on Great Sangir Island, belonging to Holland, by the voleanic eruption ef Juue 17. Two thousand inhabitants were killed.

Moncron, July 23. Dr. Weldon’s action for hbel against the Moncton Transcript has been concluded, with a verdict for the plaintiff. The jury awarded him $50 and costs,

One delegate grew - enthutiastic in speaking of northern Al- berta and said he never saw or expected to see a country where the conditions were so favorable to mixad farming. Three of the party were down to Nelson, B. C., and were surprised at the growth of that place and the richness of the mineral deposits. They predict a great future for the Koote- nay mining district. There are two large delegations from Nebraska and Dakota now in Edmonton, and they speak of the coun- try in a way that would be a revelation to many eastern people who have no faith in the future of Canada, They leave for Xegina in the morning.

Dearie, July 21.—There was a bloody riot in New lipperary to-day as a consequence of the excitement over the elections. Several Parnellites made an attack on a party of anti- Parnellites in the street, and clubs and fists were freely used. Both sides added to their numbers, and when the police arrived a score or more of the combatants lay on the grouud finconscious; the officers used their clubs vigorously, and the crowd was partly dis- persed. Two hours afterwards the worse element of both factions again began rioting through the town. Men not concerned in the fight were overpowered and maltreated, and several men who fled to their homes for pro- tection were dragged out and knocked about in the street. ‘heir houses were ransacked, windows and doors knocked out, and furniture smashed or thrown inte the street. Women and children were driven out and sent crying and screaming to the outskirts of the town. Finally the police got the mob under control, afte: neatly an hour of hard fighting. Seven- teen of the rioters were seriou-ly ivjared.
