There were present the Commissioner of Public Works, Hou. D. Farquharson, Gov’t. Engineer Macmillan and Mr. A. B. Mckenzie. After viewing the grounds, planus and specifications they came to the conclusion, one and all, that there was no place for a foundation ac~ cording to the plans and epccifications pre- pared by © B Chappel, who styles him-~ se'fan arobitect, and that the building couid not be built withouta large expendi- ture for extra work before ( could proceed with my contract. I might here say, that by my contract, nothing was to be paid for as extra work or material unless I had the written authority ot the Commissioner of Public Works and the Architect for doing such work.

Deats or Ma. Fixtayeon.—-It is with deep rezret that we to-day announce the death of Mr. D. W. Finlayson, of the firm of Finlayson & McKinnon, which occur~ red this morning at five o’clock. About ten days ago Mr Finlayson was attacked by pneamonia, from Which disease, not~ withstanding the best medical attendance avd most assiduous nursing,ne failed to rex cover. Mr. Finlayson was a young man of excellent character and good business abi~ lity, and made friends wherever he weot. He was an active member of the Fire Yew partment and was prominently identified with the Oddfellows and the Caledonian Club. About three veara ago he married a laneghter of Mr. William Batt, of this city. To kis bereaved widow, mother, sister, brother ava other relatives we extend our sympetiy.
