Orrawa,A pril 24—Advices from Wasb- ington state that the Attorney General of the United States has g ven the opinion that under the present law the government has no authority to prohibit the importa- tin of Canadian lumber.
It will be necessary to obtain lgislation in order to bring about this prohibition.

Sirn,—There appears to be a good deal of controversy going on between the two dailies upoa the prohibition qnestion, especially as to who is right and who is wrong in re the publisbiog of the Execu- tive Committee’s report in full of the branch of the Dominion Temperance Aliiance meeting held in the Y. M. C. A. ha'l on the 30 h March last. I, asa mem- ber of the Alliance, and one who was pre sent at the meeting, can youch for the
correctnesss of the repr. When the President of the Alliance read the report of the Executive Committee
it was received with great applause. Ic was unanimously resolved that the re~ port be published in full in the Guardian newspaper. The report was sent over to the Guardian cffive that same night fer pub- lica ion. I wated severai days to ee the report come out iv the Guardian, but upto the preeert time the Guardian has not nublished that report in full. Tbe Satur- day after the Alliance meeting they pub- lished a synopsis of the meeting, giving the names of the new officers and the resolutions pass2d. The daily Patriot of | Saterday evening published the Morning Gaardian’s report of the meeting almost verbatim. Up to this day neither the Patriot nor the Guardian has published the report of the Alliance in full.
